Healthcare is dynamic and complex. Nurses graduating from a master’s degree program must demonstrate competencies that will allow them to respond to current and emerging trends in healthcare. Each week, you will address one or more of the 9 Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing. As you plan, develop, implement and evaluate your Informatics practicum project, reflect on how this project and your graduate education have prepared you to meet the growing needs of healthcare and the diverse populations we serve. Essential V: Informatics and Healthcare Technologies. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2011), informatics and healthcare technologies are closely associated with modern healthcare by using the two concepts and applying them to patient care. A master’s degree nurse uses informatics and technologies to deliver and enhance care, integrates communication to coordinate care, manages and analyzes data to improve outcomes, uses health information for evidence-based practice and patient education, and facilitates EHR to improve patient care. This integration of both informatics and healthcare technology enhances the quality of care, promote patient safety, improve patient outcome and overall deliver efficient healthcare. As for my practicum project, telemedicine enables virtual healthcare delivery through informatics. Telemedicine is a health-related service with the help of telecommunicating and electronic information technologies (Haleem et al., 2021). It connects healthcare providers and patients through technology which is useful in the diverse population in my facility. The wide range of healthcare technology which includes video conference platforms, mobile applications,
and remote monitoring enables telemedicine, remote consultation, and continuous remote management of chronic diseases. Telemedicine leverages informatics and healthcare technology to provide medical services and health-related information. It has been proven as a valuable tool in meeting the growing needs of healthcare and serving many diverse populations including rural communities and vulnerable populations. Telemedicine is a valuable addition to the healthcare system offering accessibility, convenience, and personalized care in the increasingly digital modern healthcare.
