The focus on prevention, wellness, waste reduction, and health equity in population
health policies is gaining traction as a more all-encompassing strategy for enhancing
general well-being. These policies seek to create an overall healthier society by
addressing not only chronic diseases, but also racial injustice, economic inequality, and
gender inequality in health. This initiative is founded on the belief that a healthy
population is beneficial to society as a whole (New York State Department of Health,
n.d.), which is consistent with the fundamental notion that health is a communal
endeavour that transcends individual boundaries. This perspective emphasizes the
importance of addressing systemic issues that impact people's health and highlights the
interdependence of health.
Access to medical care, the quality of care provided, and the health outcomes of
individuals are all directly impacted by healthcare policies; therefore, all citizens,
regardless of their political leanings, should care about them. As a consequence, health
care-related issues occupy a prominent place on presidential agendas, indicating their
significance to the population. However, the high visibility of these issues also means
that they are frequently the focus of acrimonious debate and analysis. Presidential
attention has been drawn to the urgent issue of mental health in healthcare. One can
learn a great deal about the objectives and strategies of the current and previous
presidents by analyzing how they dealt with this issue. Observing what others have
done will help you identify areas where you can make adjustments or generate new
ideas.
The manner in which presidents discuss mental health not only demonstrates their
concern for the well-being of citizens but also influences how the nation perceives and
comprehends mental health issues. The Biden-Harris administration has made
substantial financial and strategic investments to combat the mental health problem. The
American Rescue Plan has allocated a substantial amount, nearly $4 billion, to expand
access to mental health and substance abuse therapies. In addition, an additional 27
billion dollars in projected funding and $100 billion in direct expenditures are being
considered for the next decade (FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Highlights
Strategy to Address the National Mental Health Crisis | The White House, 2022). Given
the ever-changing climate of mental health awareness and treatment, it is conceivable
that future presidents will adopt very different strategies. While some presidents may
focus on eliminating stigma and expanding access to mental health remedies, others
may opt to integrate mental health care into the larger health care system.
The population health policies' emphasis on prevention, wellness, and health equity
reflects the need for collective action to enhance health outcomes. Due to their
substantial impact on the health of citizens, healthcare policies frequently occupy a
prominent place on presidential agendas. The issue of mental health has received the
attention of the president, which necessitates cautious strategies that adapt to growing
public understanding and knowledge. By learning from prior initiatives and perpetually
refining strategies, policymakers can better address mental health issues and improve
the health of the population as a whole.
