Short Answer Questions
Read each question and answer carefully and answer ALL of the following questions:
1.
It is important for healthcare workers to use their detailed knowledge of the structure
and functioning of body systems to check health status of a client prior to delivering
treatments.
Why do you think it is important for a healthcare worker to use their detailed
knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to check the patient's health status?
(minimum 20, maximum 50 words)
The human body consists of different systems and a patient’s health may be
affected by one or more if they’re not functioning properly. A detailed knowledge
of anatomy and physiology helps a healthcare worker recognise and identify
what’s occurring and what steps they should/could take to help the patient.
2.
a) List the eleven (11) major systems in the human body.
1.
Skeletal
2.
Cardiovascular
3.
Respiratory
4.
Integumentary
5.
Nervous
6.
Digestive
7.
Reproductive

b)
Choose three (3) of these systems and explain them in detail. Please include the
name of the system, its function, and three (3) organs that make up this system
1.
Cardiovascular
The cardiovascular system is the system that supplies the organs and cells in
your body with oxygen and nutrients. This system also transports carbon dioxide
and waste products away from organs and cells This is made up of the heart,
blood vessels and blood. This system can be divided into two divisions:
- The pulmonary: Right side of the heart receiving deoxygenated from body and
transporting it to lungs
- The systematic circuit: Left side of heart receives oxygenated blood from lungs
to transport to the body
2.
Nervous system brain, spinal cord, nerves
The nervous system controls all the body’s activities. It controls the maintenance
of normal functions and the ability to cope in emergency situations. The nervous
system is made up the brain, spinal cord and nerves. It can also be divided into 2
systems:
- Central nervous system: brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral system: connects CNS to rest of the body.
3.
Respiratory
The respiratory system supplies oxygen to and removes carbon dioxide from the
body through the exchange of air between the lungs and the atmosphere. Three
examples include the nose, lungs and trachea
3.
What methods might be used to obtain accurate information about patient's physical
health status or actual/potential problems regarding their health status?
(minimum 20, maximum 50 words)
These methods can be used to obtain accurate information about a patient:
-
Observation of patients activities
-
Review of health records and other medical documents
-
Consultation with patients and asking them questions to identify
issues. May also to be to consult with friends/families, GP and other
specialists

patient's health or physical condition.
Internal factors:
-
inter-relationship between body systems
-
Emotional responses
-
Patterns of thinking
External factors:
-
Diet and nutrition
-
Use of substances e.g. Alcohol, tobacco, drugs
-

6.
What is “scope of practice”?
Why is it important for a healthcare worker to know their scope of practice and
boundaries, as well as working in line with job role and organisation requirements?
(minimum 20, maximum 100 words)
Scope of practice is the guidelines that healthcare workers must work within.
They must carry out procedures and processes within their knowledge, skills
and certification. This is important as this regulates how things are carried out
and they are following the law safely and effectively
7.
What are the significant variations from normal health status that might impact on
the following body systems?
(Please provide at least three (3) medical / health conditions for each system, and list

Oral health is important in a person’s overall health as it affects the ability to eat,
speak and socialise due to the pain and discomfort which can lead to lasting
physical and psychological disability. Poor oral health can lead to a number of
chronic diseases such as cancers and diabetes.
Two oral health diseases include:
-
Cavities (tooth decay)
A common oral disease where areas of teeth that have been
permanently damaged/may have holes in them. This is due to
bacteria, food and acid coat the teeth and form a plaque which then
starts to eat away the enamel which eventually leads to eating away
the underlying dentin.
-
Gingivitis(gum disease)
Inflammation of gums, most likely due to poor brushing and flossing
habits which results in plaque building up your teeth. Untreated gum
disease can lead to periodontitis which is a more serious infection
