1 Summative Reflection Tywanna Swain The University of Arizona Global Campus MHA 601: Principles of Health Care Administration Dr. Yvonne Lozano November 14, 2023
2 Summative Reflection This class helped me gain a different perspective on healthcare management and leadership in the healthcare industry. My thinking was most definitely challenged in this course. From the principles of health care to the different leadership theories, I recognized several concepts I currently use as a Provider Enrollment Manager. I also learned some additional things that I could apply to my current position and use in the future, regardless of whether my career is in health care. At times, I didn't know if I was going in the right direction or was off track regarding my assignments. However, looking at my grades, I wasn't too far off course. Most Enjoyed Assignment I've enjoyed all my assignments so far in this course; however, my favorite would be the Health Care Innovation assignment from week two. I learned about the different types of healthcare innovation and how I can apply them to a career in healthcare management. I enjoyed this assignment for many reasons. First, I enjoy creating PowerPoint presentations. I prefer to develop presentations as opposed to writing papers. I enjoy the creative aspect of creating PowerPoints. I also enjoyed this assignment because it gave me insights into innovation and how it can assist with things such as improving patient outcomes by leading to the development of new treatments and technologies. Also, it can help with cost reduction by streamlining new processes and procedures and making health care more accessible and affordable. These are fundamental concepts that will help me excel in my career. Least Enjoyed Assignment The assignment that I liked the least was week one's assignment, Graduate Readiness Modules. There was valuable information in the modules that can prepare me to be successful in this course and future courses. Still, I liked learning more of the core information, such as team
3 communication and ethics in the healthcare community. These are things that I could apply in my current role. The Graduate Readiness modules provided information on proper time management and information on APA formatting. I already have good time management skills and was familiar with APA formatting from my bachelor's program. So, not that the information wasn't helpful because I did learn some new things; I just found it to be the least interesting. Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Diversity includes many factors, such as culture, educational background, and sexual orientation, and is not limited to race and gender. Diversity leads to better innovation and creativity as people come from various backgrounds and experiences and can contribute ideas based on their knowledge and experiences. I learned that equity is significant because it encourages fair treatment and does not consider race, gender, status, etc. Inclusion promotes a work environment where people feel respected and valued. If all of these things are embraced, this can lead to better patient care and improvement in the organization. Application of Acquired Knowledge in Current or Future Job I will apply what I learned to my current job by promoting and encouraging elements such as diversity, equity, and inclusion. I will also work to innovate new ideas and perspectives by encouraging collaboration, ensuring that I hire people with different backgrounds and foster an environment where staff's voices can be heard, and their ideas can flourish. I will also make sure that I am applying the appropriate techniques to overcome the barriers to the diffusion of health care. Last, I will work to ensure that I apply conflict management techniques to address any conflicts that may arise in my organization.
