Leadership Case Studies
The healthcare environment today comes with many challenges. Many of these
challenges are related to issues surrounding financial limitations, expanding and aging
populations, implementation of new technology, and skilled workforce availability to name a
few. The world of healthcare also presents its share of ethical challenges. Every person has his or
her individual ethics and morals. However, healthcare professionals also need to adhere to the
ethical guidelines set in place for their healthcare organization. “Ethics within healthcare are
important because workers must recognize healthcare dilemmas, make good judgments and
decisions based on their values while keeping within the laws that govern them” (Haddad &
Geiger, 2023). Certain legal, ethical, and financial risk factors need to be addressed in the
selected scenario. In addition to identifying strategies to mitigate these risks, it is also important
to consider their potential impact on patient care if these strategies do not yield the desired
results.
Leadership Issues
The article highlights several leadership problems. There are several ethical issues
identified in the case. First off, Mike, BCCH's new CEO, treated his employees with an awful
amount of disrespect and unprofessionalism. When he was upset, he would frequently yell at his
team to establish his dominance (Walston & Johnson, 2022, Case 23, pg. 603). Secondly, Mike
didn't try to get to know his employees and instead came across as unapproachable, making it
difficult for him to relate to them. Third, he was the only one who brought ideas to the meetings
and did not encourage the workers to do so. These actions are not the actions that should be
displayed by a leader. “L
eaders’ behaviors dictate the ethical or unethical practices in an
3
organization, as their actions, good and bad, are typically emulated by employees (Walston &
Johnson, 2022, pg. 121).
Legal, Ethical, Financial, and Human Risks
Mike's disrespectful and unethical actions may cause a number of ethical, legal, and
financial problems for the organization. According to Grissinger (2017), "disrespectful behavior
undermines individual contributions to care, chills communication and collaboration, undermines
staff morale, increases staff absenteeism and resignations, creates an unhealthy or hostile work
environment, causes some to leave their profession, and ultimately harms patients." A hostile
work environment may give rise to harassment-related problems, which may put the facility in
the legal spotlight. Let's say workers believe they are the target of harassment. If that is the case,
they are entitled to sue the corporation for harassment or discrimination. If liquidated damages
are awarded then, the organization may be forced to face a significant financial burden. The
scenario also includes a number of human risk factors that could be impactful to the
organization. As a result of Mike’s actions, the company could see a decrease in production and
performance because of the lack of employee motivation. There could also be high turnover
rates. Employees may decide to leave the jobs due to the managers behavior resulting in staff
shortages. All these could cause adverse events, increased errors, and possible harm to patient
safety.
Strategies to Address Identified Issues and Risks
There are several strategies that can be implemented to address the identified issues and
risks. First, implement a code of conduct. A code of conduct outlines the desired behavior and
establishes ethical guidelines that staff must follow. In the code of conduct, issues such as respect
and professionalism are addressed. Another strategy is to provide staff training. Training staff on

topics such as business etiquette, effective communication, conflict resolution techniques, and
the impact of disrespectful behavior on the organization can be very helpful in combating
inappropriate behaviors.
An additional strategy is to create and promote a positive work
environment. This is important to combatting an unprofessional work environment and
disrespect. “Leaders should set the tone with an attitude of mutual respect for the contributions of
all staff, remain open to questions and new ideas, and reward outstanding examples of
collaborative teamwork, respectful communication, and positive interpersonal skills” (Grissinger,
2017).
Impacts on Patient Care or Satisfaction
If the identified strategies go differently than planned, there could be an impact on patient
care. Without a Code of Conduct, there could be an extreme lack of professionalism. Because the
code of conduct sets the standards for health care professionals, without it, there could be an
increase in bad attitudes, unprofessional behaviors, and unprofessional interactions with patients.
This could impact the quality of care that is provided. If training does not work out, this could
affect the team. Team collaboration could decline, causing a decrease in teamwork and
negatively impacting cooperation, thus generating potential harm to patient care. Last, a hostile
work environment can lead to poor communication, lousy collaboration, and decreased staff
morale. All these lead to poor patient experience, causing potential medical errors that jeopardize
patient safety.
Conclusion
5
In conclusion, there were several leadership issues identified in case 39. The new CEO,
Mike, was very rude to his staff and disrespectful to his staff. This caused distrust and low
employee engagement.
Disrespect from your manager can have serious consequences
on the
team and organization. Issues such as stress, burnout, and turnover can occur as a result of
managerial disrespect. Along with this can come legal, ethical, and financial penalties. Some
strategies to combat the identified issues are to create a code of conduct for the organization,
provide staff training in areas such as communication and business etiquette. Also, creating a
positive work environment can also aid in combatting organizational issues. If the indicated
strategies fail, then this could have a negative impact on patient care which could result in
medical errors that can risk patient safety.
