A topic that everyone can relate to is COVID-19. COVID has been the most significant
pandemic of our time and will possibly continue to be the only major pandemic of our
lives. COVID-19 produced many different variants and overwhelmed healthcare as we
all know. The medical field was understaffed, and patients were at an all-time high.
Average hospital wait times increased and traumas of everyday life became more of a
life-or-death situation as hospitals did not have beds to accommodate such injuries due
to COVID. A pandemic as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) could infect more than 60% of the US population (Lawrence 2020). This
pandemic reached the presidential level in no time. President Donald Trump was in
office at this time where he was expected to implement and guide the United States
through this pandemic. He and his colleagues including Dr. Fauci lead the team in the
future steps of eradication. Where mask mandates were implemented inside and out of
hospitals. Mandates were put into place to not leave your home, and schools and
businesses were shut down and made to work from home. In some areas of the United
States, it was made a misdemeanor to leave your home if caught. Through all of this, a
vaccine was created to try and defend as many as possible from this illness that was on
the uprising. As for healthcare, all essential workers were expected to come to work, day
in and out with very little compensation or support.
A couple of social determinants of health can be added to this pandemic. One
example is community engagement. Everyone in the community needed to abide by the
government and healthcare administration’s mask mandates and social distancing to
eradicate the issue. Data and surveillance can be applied to the number of individuals
abiding by the guidelines implemented the outcomes of patients and the number of
individuals hospitalized (CDC 2022).
Things I would have done differently as the government is to give adequate
compensation for those who had to work the front lines for the last three years. Not only
did this illness take a toll on the population but also had a major impact on health care.
Nursing is at an all-time low in a time of desperate need. I would have applied more
compensation to healthcare workers for their time while this pandemic was among us.
Also, would have implemented better strategies to be prepared for a disaster of this
nature. Now that we have seen what can happen, we need to come together as a
healthcare nation to be prepared for future pandemics of this nature now that we know
what can happen.
