CHCCCS002 – Assignment What you have to do Answer the ten (10) short answer questions below. Questions 1. Identify the general factors that should be taken into account when planning to assist a client with movement. When planning to assist a client, first identify any key people who know the client to give you insights about their needs and any risks. Check mobility status: any capabilities or limitations the client can complete with or without assistance. Check if there’s any weightbearing or surgical orders from allied health professionals about restrictions on weightbearing activities. Check cognitive status: level of attentiveness, response times, balance and neurological muscular function. 2. Define ‘body mechanics’ Body mechanics describes the ways we move our bodies daily in all activities for example sitting, standing, lifting, sleeping etc. This involves the coordinated effort of muscles, bones, and nervous system to maintain balance, posture and motion. 3. List the general principles of good body mechanics. Avoid unnecessary twisting by placing feet in the direction you want to lift an object. Have more stability by standing with feet apart. Reduce twisting and bending back by get close as possible to the load you want to transfer/lift. Make sure to have secure grip. Keep back straight and bend at knees. Engage core before lifting to help your spine from bending/flexing Transfer weight from leg to leg and change direction by using muscles and joints of your legs. 4. Where will you find the policies and procedures for cleaning and managing lifting and transfer equipment? Manufacturers and suppliers of equipment must provide easy instructions on how to safely use equipment. Policies and procedures should also be available with the person in charge. 5. How is competency in manual handling techniques maintained? Competency is maintained by workplaces providing consistent information, training and supervision and safe methods for completing tasks as well as safe tools, equipment, and environment. There would also be policies and procedures that employees must follow and risk management plans in place. 6. List the factors that need to be taken into account regarding the condition of a client when planning to assist with movement. Mobility and cognitive status at that moment The environment – is there stairs, ramp etc. Any pain that may limit movement or be a risk. Any medication that may affect their movement. 7. Define ‘manual handling’. Manual handling is any activity that requires use of force exerted by an individual to lift, push, pull, carry etc. 8. List the aims of an effective manual handling policy Eliminate the need for manual handling. Encourage clients to be independent as possible. Encourage use of equipment. Use risk management. Maintain equipment. Train staff 9. Identify four (4) situations that will require specific manual handling training Assisting clients in emergencies: may be required to bear full weight of a person if client’s life is at risk by lifting/pushing or manoeuvring away from danger. May have to use first aid training Assisting clients with mobility aids Assisting clients with a hoist or mechanical lifter Assisting clients into a wheelchair 10. Identify the importance of ROM exercises for clients. Range of motion exercises are important for clients to do as it enhances quality of life and decreases risk of injury and pain. These exercises help with the mobility and flexibility of joints and reduce stiffness.
