I am so glad I was assigned the trait of grit to talk about, and I am excited to show how I
demonstrate this trait. Most of my life has been challenging due to my mother giving birth to me
when she was only sixteen years old and being a drug addict and alcoholic. I moved almost every
year and attended twenty different schools, from preschool to High school. I demonstrate grit in
everything I do daily. A specific time in my life when I demonstrated grit, would be when I was
trying to get out of my previous role at Comcast. The work-life balance in the position could
have been better due to mandatory overtime, the lack of flexibility, and the work schedule. The
manager was also tough to work with due to her expectations of us. She would assign our team
many projects and tasks on top of our normal workload and say it was part of our job. That
would impact our year-end reviews because even though we completed extra projects, she did
not count it as additional work but as part of our average load. If we had had another manager,
those projects would have been used to help us receive highly effective on our year-end review.
Instead, it looked like we all did the bare minimum all year. When I started looking for another
role within Comcast, she made it even harder for me because she began to find every flaw I
made and would write me up for it. I got a written warning right when I found a job I would like,
but being on a written warning meant I could not apply for that role. This was the first time in
my work history that I ever got a final warning and had the threat of losing my job. I would need
to wait six months for the written warning to fall off. That felt like forever at the time. I set goals,
triple-checked everything I did, and ensured I didn’t do anything that would cause me to lose my
job or jeopardize my opportunity to apply for a new role. As soon as that warning fell off, I
applied for the role I currently am in and got it! This was one of my work life's most stressful and
growing opportunities. I would not have been able to accomplish this task without my grit. Being
open-minded and driven to adapt to the situation I found myself in was the only way I could
make it through those six months. It would have been easier to give up and find another job with
a different company, but my wife was pregnant with our third child, and Comcast is a great place
to work.
I have never thought of resilience and grit being part of each other. After reading chapter ten and
watching these TED talks, I have learned that you can’t have grit without a lot of resilience. New
York Times best-selling author Paul G. Stoltz created an acronym GRIT (growth, resilience,
instinct, and tenacity) to help people utilize growth mindset attributes. This acronym helped me
gain this personal idea as I prepared to write this discussion. I will explain what each of these
means to me. Having a willingness to learn and develop myself is what growth means to me.
Resilience is how I continuously adapt and adjust to challenges that are placed in front of me.
Instinct is using my creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to find efficient ways to achieve my
goals. My motivation to do whatever it takes to achieve my goals is how tenacity applies to me. I
plan to use this GRIT acronym when I make goals to ensure I am using these attributes within
my goals.
My social support network that I can rely on is my wife. She has always been there for me when
I need help getting through any challenge that is placed before me. She encouraged me to return
to college and pursue a career I love. She is also my emotional and appraisal support. Her
suggestions and ideas regarding challenges are essential because I tend to overthink and overlook
important facts during these times.
I can always depend on her being honest and upfront when
asking for her feedback since she knows me so well, and I don’t want to disappoint her. She
knows how to help me de-stress and uplift me when I feel defeated and alone. With her by my
side, I know without a doubt that I will be able to graduate with my bachelor’s degree here at
UAGC.
