5-2 Activity: reflection: Self 2 Individual framework of perception Through my research I have gained a better understanding of what it means to be obese. This has encouraged me to look deeper at my own lifestyle choices. By lowering my own weight, I can avoid not only the health effects that come along with being obese but also the stereotyping that that society places on people that are obese. I can lower my risk of heart disease and diabetes while also giving myself a chance at achieving a better position at work. Before this assignment I knew some of the ways being obese affected an individual’s health but did not realize all the ways that bias, and discrimination effected people that are obese. When I thought about discrimination, I thought about people making nasty comments, or bullying. I did not realize that the discrimination went so deeply into things like job placement and the ability to be promoted. Through this assignment I have been able to look at my own experiences and how being obese might have affected me in the past. Bias I have realized that I have not only been the victim of bias and discrimination based on my own weight but have also been guilty of judging others based on theirs. For example, I have been quick to judge people’s abilities based on the way they look. One instance of this recently was when I met my girl’s cheer coach. She was on the larger side. I immediately wondered how she was going to teach the team how to do stunts, tumbling, and jumps. Turns out I judged her completely wrong, not only was she an amazing coach but she also coached the team to victory in the regional cheer competition. Being overweight myself I have also been on the receiving end of judgement. When I first applied for my job, I was questioned multiple times about my abilities to be on the floor with the children and the level of activity I was going to be able to provide to the classroom. At the time I did not think anything of it but after the interview was over, I looked
5-2 Activity: reflection: Self 3 back and realized that it was due to the way that I look. It made me feel worse my weight than I already did. Now that I am aware of my own bias, I can take the steps to ensure they are not reflected in my actions. I might not be able to immediately change my way of thinking as it is something I have learned over time, but I can change the way I act on those thoughts. I can choose to encourage others, especially those that may face discrimination regularly, instead of putting them down more by the way I look at them or the words that I choose. By being aware of my own bias I can be careful not to pass them along to my children or the children that I teach. Field of study or profession Being sensitive to everyone is especially important in my line of work. I know that children begin forming their personal identities at an early age and by making them feel good about how they look it will help them build a strong base for their self-esteem to form on. Having a deeper understanding of how children with obesity are treated can help me be on the look out for this while in the classroom. Being able to interact with people without bias will also be helpful since I interact with many families from diverse backgrounds and cultures all the time in my career. Both the parents and the students that I teach come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. By having a better understanding of what they go through it can help me make better decisions and solve problems more effectively. If I am ever promoted to a position that is responsible for hiring, then being aware of the way obese people are discriminated against in this way will also help me be not make the same mistakes and look at what the person can do instead of what the person looks like. I am hoping that now that I am aware of all the risks, discrimination, and bias that obese people go through that I will be able to stick with my healthier lifestyle and change my own weight before I end up with long-term health problems. By better understanding obesity
