Case conceptualization: an example The I CAN START model is a holistic, strength-based, culturally sensitive treatment planning model. I: Individual Counselor C: Contextual Assessment A: Assessment and Diagnosis N: Necessary Level of Care S: Strength T: Treatment Approach A: Aims and objectives of treatment R: Research-Based Interventions T: Therapeutic Support Services Raul, is a 27-year-old client that comes to you for counseling services. He reported feeling sad and hopeless. Additionally, Raul stated that he has no energy and is becoming increasingly socially isolated. He said, “I feel like my life has no meaning,” and reported an overall sense of being stuck. Raul stated that he has a relatively “healthy” family and denies any history of abuse. What is person-centered therapy? What are the source of people’s problems? How do people change? Skills demonstrated? 1. Person-Centered Therapy: Person-centered therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, is a humanistic and client-centered approach to counseling. It emphasizes creating a non- judgmental and empathetic therapeutic relationship wherein the counselor provides a safe and supportive environment for the client to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The focus is on self-exploration, self-awareness, and personal growth. In person-centered therapy, the counselor adopts an empathetic and genuine stance, seeking to understand the client's experiences from their perspective. The counselor facilitates a climate of unconditional positive regard, acceptance, and empathetic understanding, allowing the client to find their own solutions and meanings. 2. Sources of Raul's Problems: Raul is experiencing symptoms of depression and emotional distress, evident from feelings of sadness, hopelessness, lack of energy, social isolation, and a sense of meaninglessness. The sources of his problems could be multifaceted, potentially including: Psychological Factors: Internal struggles with self-esteem, identity, or unresolved emotional issues.
Socio-environmental Factors: External stressors, life changes, or difficulties in relationships that affect his emotional well-being. Existential Factors: Questions about life's purpose, meaning, and the direction of his life might contribute to his feelings of being stuck. 3. How People Change in Person-Centered Therapy: People change in person-centered therapy through the following processes: Self-Exploration and Awareness: Clients like Raul gain a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, leading to increased self-awareness. Acceptance and Non-Judgment: Raul experiences unconditional positive regard and acceptance from the counselor, allowing him to accept himself without judgment and work through his challenges openly. Empowerment: Through the therapeutic relationship, Raul is empowered to find his own solutions, make choices, and take responsibility for his life and well- being. Integration and Growth: Raul has the opportunity to integrate new insights and perspectives gained in therapy into his life, promoting personal growth and positive changes. 4. Skills Demonstrated: In counseling Raul using person-centered therapy, the counselor would demonstrate the following skills: Empathy: Understand and share Raul's feelings and perspectives without judgment. Unconditional Positive Regard: Offer support, acceptance, and warmth irrespective of Raul's thoughts or behaviors. Reflective Listening: Paraphrase and reflect back Raul's thoughts and feelings to demonstrate understanding and validation. Non-Directiveness: Avoid giving advice or imposing solutions, letting Raul lead the exploration and decision-making process. In summary, person-centered therapy focuses on creating a supportive and empathetic therapeutic relationship, enabling the client like Raul to explore their experiences, gain self- awareness, find their own solutions, and ultimately achieve personal growth and positive change
