Week 8 case study: Challenges for the future
From a health psychology perspective, the greatest opportunity in my view is helping
those in my immediate community.
I live in a rural county and find many children living in
poverty due to their parents’ drug and alcohol habits.
In conjunction with the existing program
of providing meals to take home on Fridays after school, work needs to be done with behavioral
immunizations.
Programs to help children and adolescents see not only the health aspects, but
the social economic effects of drugs and alcohol as well.
Many times, attacking the problem
from the parents is not enough if the family is living in poverty (Kaplan, 2009).
The youth need
to see how great their adult life could be and not let their children go hungry.
To think of youth
having stressful life conditions and that can link later morbidity and mortality rates is over
whelming and stressful to me.
Such a program could make behavior change a key target to help reduce the vast public
health burden of chronic lifestyle illnesses.
Johnson and Acabchuk note that daily stressors such
as food insecurity are climbing based on recent measures for adverse childhood experiences
(2018).
Offering youth programs to the community that may allow a greater participation for the
families that cannot afford ways to get their children active.
Constant role models outside of the
home can influence the future choices of an individual.
A program would begin with a small
after school program or volunteer basis to give up recess to participate.
If middle school or high
school is involved it could be focused on helping others as a way to see there is benefit in
working together and building each other up.
Most of all avoiding the cycle that is seen in
impoverish families for the future generation and decrease the health issues that are prevalent in
such families.
