Teaching My Host Teacher’s Lesson
Which aspects of the lesson did you execute well?
I believe overall I did a good job in preparation to teach the lesson and teach it to
the students. I was able to collaborate with my host teacher to prepare the lesson. The
lesson plan included the learning target, success criteria, and the standard. Before
teaching the lesson, I made sure to analyze and break down the learning target, standard,
and success criteria to make sure students would easily be able to understand them.
Overall, I think I was successfully able to teach lesson 13 on introducing the tricky word
“you”, and teaching my students how to decode, blend, read, and build words.
Which aspects of the lesson could be modified if you were teaching it again?
I don’t think I would modify anything within the lesson plan because my host
teacher did a great job in placing her ideas into the lesson plan to teach the lesson where
students would be able to meet the objective at the end of the lesson.
What adjustments did you make during the lesson? Why?
One adjustment I had to make during the lesson for my struggling readers was to
work with them in a small group to complete the activity page 13.1 while the rest of the
class worked independently. For this worksheet students were to write dictated words.
For example, the word cut, students needed to add the magic e and were able to see that
after adding the “e” to the word cut, it changed the meaning of the word. I was able to
work in a small group with my struggling readers to help them read the word then
changing it by adding the magic “e” and then having them identify the new word.

How did the teaching strategies support the learning environment by allowing students to
take charge of their own learning?
Students were able to take charge of their own learning in many ways. First, this
lesson plan was modified to include several stages of instruction. I was able to first teach
a mini lesson about Magic e. Where students say the words I give them, then figuring out
the new word by adding the magic “e”. This helps students see and understand the
concept and approach of how adding magic “e” makes it say its name. Next, I was able to
engage the students in guided practice. We worked together as a class to decode words.
Finally, Students were able to work independently where they needed to complete a
worksheet on their own. This allowed students to apply what they learned and take
ownership of their learning by reading and writing words with the magic e on their own.
Did you feel successful in establishing behavioral expectations and processes that led to
strong communication? Why or why not?
Yes, the students already knew the class expectations that were taught by my host
teacher. Students were able to listen to directions and stay on task when I was teaching
the lesson that then led to strong communication. My host teacher had already put in
place her rules, routines, and class procedures. This helped because students already
knew what was expected from them and what to expect from the teacher. The students
did not encounter any behavioral issues throughout the lesson.
What challenges did you encounter? Was it challenging to implement the lesson or lesson
design?
The only challenge I encountered was when students were asked to work

independently. I had a few students that struggled with reading. This worksheet was not
hard or complicated but the only issue they had was reading the words that they had to
change by adding the magic e at the end of the word and identifying what the new word
meant. Also, for my gifted students they completed the worksheet in less than 5 minutes,
and I was not prepared for that. I needed to have something else for them to do when they
were done that challenged them and not have them be bored.
Did the students meet the learning objectives? What evidence demonstrates their
learning? How will you record academic progress from this lesson for student records?
Yes, the learning objective was met because I made sure the students were
assessed by using formative assessment where I monitored my students learning by
having them complete a worksheet independently. I was able to see that the majority of
the class met the objective because they were able to read and write the words with the
magic e. Also, students were given a task to do at home where they needed to find and
come up with 5 to 10 words that had the magic e at the end.
How could you present this lesson with multiple perspectives in mind to help encourage
student critical thinking?
Allowing students to share their ideas and their way of understanding the concept
helps create a more inclusive and diverse learning environment. It allows students to see
and understand that there are different ways of understanding and interpreting
information. Give students open ended questions where they have to explain their
reasoning and show how they got their answer rather than just yes or no answers. It is
beneficial to present information in several ways to ensure that all students' learning

styles are met.
What did you learn about your host teacher's lesson that can guide you in teaching the
lesson you wrote?
From my host teacher's lesson I learned that in order to successfully teach a
lesson, it is important to have a clear understanding of the objective or standard that I
want my students to meet. I also learned that it is important to outline important learning
targets that go with the standard. Finally, once I know the standard and learning targets it
can be beneficial to align the learning targets to the activities and assessments.
