Week 1 Discussion: HIM Department Tour
Post #1
Which aspect of Health Information Management do you picture yourself working in?
I see myself working in the medical billing and coding department in the Health Information
Management field. I plan to work remotely.
Explain why this field is of interest to you.
I have worked in the medical field as a care giver and med tech. I want to continue my journey in
working in the medical field helping people. It is not just a job or career to me; it is a passion.
The reason medical billing and coding interest me is I am still able to help people and make a
difference. As a care giver and med tech, I have seen a lot of death and that was too
heartbreaking for me. Working in the medical billing and coding field allows me to continue to
help people, just in a different way. I know that this can lead to other amazing opportunities as
well.

Identify the difference between a medical record number and an account number.
A medical record number will always remain the same for the patient within that network. An
account number changes every time the patient receives care for each encounter within the
network and outside the network.
The Joint Commission standard requires that charts are completed within ____ days after
discharge.
The Joint Commission standards require that charts are completed within 30 days after discharge.
Identify why most new coders start their coding career coding outpatient records and then
move to ambulatory or inpatient records.
Most new coders start their coding career coding outpatient records first because they tend to be
easier, and less complicated types of accounts, while the new coder is getting their training. They
need to ensure that the quality and quantity needs are being met 100%. Once the coder gains
more experience than they will be moved over to ambulatory and inpatient records to code.
What credential is needed for an HIM professional to work in a cancer registry?
The credential needed for an HIM professional to work in a cancer registry is CTR (certified
tumor registrar).
What does the acronym MPI stand for?
MPI stands for Master Patient Index.
With the remainder of your post, discuss the importance of any of the concepts mentioned
in the video.
One of the concepts talked about in this video that I find important is the computer labs that help
introduce the EHR (electronic health records) to the HIM employees. I feel that this is important
because it allows the HIM employees to freely practice and learn how to navigate the EHR
without worrying about messing anything up. This is a great resource to have. I also liked that
they allow their HIM employees to test out the new versions of the software before loading into
the live system. It allows the employees to get familiar with any new details as well as help with
any issues or bugs that can come up. I personally am a hands-on learner so being able to practice
without messing anything up is nice. I would take the time to thoroughly search and familiarize
myself with this, as well as create a few different scenarios so if it comes up then I know how to
handle it properly. I am a big believer in using all the resources that are available to you.
