Week 5 Discussion: Analytics in Healthcare
Post #1
Share a brief summary of your understanding of the scenario.
A local community hospital is planning a health fair that will provide free blood-pressure
screening and basic dental exams as well as a 20-minute exercise clinic and information on
healthy eating, smoking cessation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will be provided by
the clinic staff. HIM professionals are also helping to plan this event. There will also be
information in brochures that will be available to grab. It will have information on some of the
most commonly seen diseases in the United States such as diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer’s
disease, and chronic kidney disease. The HIM committee members are worried that some of the
people who attend this community outreach event may not be able to fully understand all the
information that is being provided. They are worried about health literacy.
Justify why the planning committee needs to focus on health literacy.
The planning committee needs to focus on healthy literacy so that the community can fully
understand and grasp all the information. What I mean by that is providing all this information is
great, but it needs to be delivered in a way that people who are not in the healthcare industry can
understand and retain.
Justify the HIM professional’s role on this planning committee.
The HIM professionals can help prepare and train the health care staff in principles and using
simple language of healthcare so the patients can easily understand what information is being
given to them. The HIM professionals are also able to help people in the community understand
health records, including EHRs and the importance of them. They are able to explain how EHR
improves the patient-provider communication.

Listen to Week 5 Lecture recording and summarize what you learned about healthcare
information systems.
I have learned about data and how it is used in our healthcare information systems. Data is facts
that have been collected. Data by itself will seem very disorganized until it is converted into
something meaningful. Once that happens then it is now information. For example, when a
patient visits a doctor, they check their vitals. Those numbers by themselves are just data until
they are converted into something meaningful like the patient’s weight is 125. There are different
types of data used clinical data, financial data, and operational data. Clinical data which is the
treatment and services provided. For example, that can include observations, medical history,
procedures, and exams. Financial data which would be the cost to run the organization. For
example, the costs to maintain the building, and purchasing new software. Operational data
which would be like patient demographics, appointments, visit and billing and reimbursements.
The operational data helps the facility decide things like should they hold a specific clinic on this
day or not. All this data is important to have to make informed decisions. The two types of data
analytics are healthcare data and clinical data. Healthcare data is used to help make informed
decisions regarding healthcare and clinical data is used to measure the quality of care provided.
Data is able to allow the healthcare system to provide better care and communication.
