HEALTH 1 ASSIGNMENT 2 CONFLICT AVOIDANCE & RESOLUTION-COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES SUBMITTED TO: DARYL LAGAYAN SUBMITTED BY: CHERILYN DOCTOR Review the following scenario, which describes a situation between two coworkers, and respond to the questions which follow applying your learnings from this course. Jenna is a Health Care Assistant who was hired on at Sunshine Seniors’ Village right after graduation. Jenna studied under a very strict instructor, who taught her never to take short cuts, and always to adhere to professional code of conduct. Jenna is assigned to a unit where residents are in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and require very close supervision. She works with two other senior HCAs Marisa and Tom who have been there for over 10 years and have a very good relationship with their supervisor Nurse Anna. Things were going very well for Jenna during the first couple of weeks, however during the third week she encountered a situation which has created a lot of stress for her and compromised her relationship with her co-workers. Jenna walked in to one of the bathrooms to find Marisa and Tom laughing standing over a resident who was sitting on the floor naked. She was horrified by what she saw, and immediately jumped in and covered the client with a towel. Marisa and Tom began to explain what had happened, but Jenna was so upset that she didn’t listen, and headed straight to their supervisor’s office to report what she had seen. What Jenna didn’t know was that the resident decided to sit on the floor before his bath, and was telling a joke when Jenna walked in. Needless to say, Marisa and Tom were not pleased, and have not spoken with Jenna since the incident.
1. How would you evaluate the way that Jenna responded to this situation, and why? I understand Jenna because I would do the same thing if it were my situation. After all, she just graduated and still needs real-life experience. Nothing can prepare us for what we will experience in the workplace when we begin our careers as HCAs. Jenna, on the other hand, should have remembered that there is no shortcut, which means she should have resisted jumping to conclusions based on what she observed. She should have inquired and explored the facts before making judgements about Marissa and Tom. 2. Describe 2 different Communication techniques which Jenna could have applied in achieving a more positive outcome to this situation. Before jumping to conclusions and reporting the incident to their supervisor, Jenna could have tried listening and hearing Marissa and Tom explain first, and then investigate by speaking with residents about what happened. In my opinion, Jenna could have achieved a better result that way. 3. Explain how you would work to repair your relationship with your co- workers if you were Jenna. What would you do and say to them? Acknowledge that you made a mistake by making false assumptions. Talk to them calmly and sincerely about how sorry you are for breaking your relationship as good colleagues.
