Unit 4 Discussion 1 Social Networks After reading this unit's materials, discuss how social networks can impact the treatment process: Discuss the role of the family in the treatment planning process. Allowing family members to have input into the treatment planning process can be helpful. It is also important to include them in therapy. The use of therapy and evidence-based practices should extend to the families of the client with compulsive and addictive behaviors. This added support can be helpful not only to the client but also to the family members. This can assist with modifying behaviors as well as the accountability that the client will have outside of the inpatient setting. By using similar therapy models with family members that are experiencing mental health concerns, stress, and anger due to dealing with the repercussion of the client’s addictive behavior. This burden can fall on spouses, parents, grandparents, and children According to a study completed in Tehran-Iran in 2020, “One of the problems which are caused by living with an addicted partner is a lack of self-esteem in the spouse of a drug abuser. Long-term drug usage disturbs the family foundation and has negative impacts on the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and experiences of spouses of drug-abusing patients. Spouses of addicts do not feel good and valuable but in reverse, they feel inefficient and undesirable.” (Kazemi et al., 2022) However, I have seen family therapy backfire when an abusive or negative family member is involved in family therapy. When the presence of a family member could inhibit treatment, they will need to be addressed separately and possibly removed from the therapy equation. As a clinician, it is our job to ensure the safety of the client both physically and mentally to ensure treatment success. Discuss if other social networks should be involved in the treatment planning process. If the client has friends, extended family, or a support person that does not have an addiction concern, that would be encouraged. It is important for clients to have a support system established prior to leaving an inpatient facility. Recovery is sometimes undermined by antisocial attitudes and behaviors that contribute to lapses, relapse, and ultimately to treatment failure. Treatment programs can address these thoughts and activities through education and activities that advance prosocial beliefs and build crucial skills, such as impulse control, self-mindfulness, and compassion. (DDAP, 2020) Describe how the treatment impacts the client's social network. Clients that are involved in an inpatient or outpatient treatment should not return to the same social network that they were using substances prior to treatment. Triggers like people, places or specific situations can cause a relapse. Many times it is difficult for clients to cut off people that they have known for a long time or are involved in a relationship with. Sometimes feelings of isolation can
cause relapse in the community. It is important to develop a sober social environment prior to discharge. (DDAP, 2020) References: Asam transition. Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. (2020).
