Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical. The appropriate duration for an individual depends on the type and degree of the patient’s problems and needs. Research indicates that most addicted individuals need at least 3 months in treatment to significantly reduce or stop their drug use and that the best outcomes occur with longer durations of treatment. Recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. As with other chronic illnesses, relapses to drug abuse can occur and should signal a need for treatment to be reinstated or adjusted. Because individuals often leave treatment prematurely, programs should include strategies to engage and keep patients in treatment. Reading through all the material presented, most of the articles presented contained information I was already aware of or use daily. However, there was one section listed in the Principles of Drug Addiction: A Research-Based Guide in the Principles of Effective Treatment section – “5 Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical” (NIDA, 2018) is something I agree with completely. I was surprised that this section stated “Generally, for residential or outpatient treatment, participation for less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness, and treatment lasting significantly longer is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes.” (NIDA, 2018) In the programs I work with, it is difficult to receive approval for more than 16 days at first and if a stay beyond 28 days is needed, I must jump through hoops to get approval from the insurance company.
One of the journal articles I read “Are market mechanisms associated with alcohol and other drug treatment outcomes?” discussed that a “longer length of stay was also associated with receiving counseling, rehabilitation, or case management compared to withdrawal treatment.” (Ritter et al., 2021) In the study that was completed the average time in treatment was 72 days, but was shorter for some and longer for others. The longer stays were mostly associated with women that were older and required additional services outside of Drug and Alcohol treatment. The percentage of people that completed treatment with longer stays was about 60% of the 46,192 participants over a 2-year period. (Ritter et al., 2021) This study was completed in Australia to determine if the level of care, length of care, and the type of facility affected the outcome for the clients.
