1. Though the author lacked knowledge of the medical industry, she informed herself of the process by studying the current process flow problems and conducting honest dialogue with nurses, doctors, and administrators, to get their thoughts on the current situation. This allowed her to gather a better understanding of the current state of things despite being new to the health care industry process. I would have studied the process very similarly. Particularly, how she conversed with the hospital staff to better understand how the current process worked. 2. The problems the author identified with the current process include issues with the staff scheduling department and them trying to figure out how long their doctors would spend with each patient. The patients with scheduled appointments are often pushed through the system with no immediate communication to scheduling or reception. 3. The author seeks to resolve these issues with the process by instituting a “pass-through lane” to handle important cases without making things too strenuous on support staff. The proposed process organizes patients into three groups. The first one is acute or severe patients who arrive at the hospital, who must be seen by a doctor immediately. The other two groups of patients include those that schedule their appointment in advance and those that are walk ins. The process would give patients with scheduled appointments top priority over walk ins and acute patients top priority overall. 4. One of the approaches to mapping a business process is called the Process Flowchart. This flowchart can be applied to almost anything in the business process. It can be used to draw up a detailed proposal for a new project to illustrate the needed steps to take. It can be used to explain how information is communicated through an organization. Another type of flowchart is a Workflow Chart which can help organizations better understand how data and documents travel within their business. It can also help them teach new employees and create a better system of organization. A Swim Lane Flowchart is extremely useful to businesses as it uses the metaphor of lanes in a pool. It is used to describe how different employees and departments communicate throughout different business processes. 5. Process mapping is extremely important and helpful to the health care industry. It greatly assists nurses, doctors, and patients by simplifying the process from the moment patients walk in the door. The added efficiency it provides everyone means less wait time for patients and eliminates many of the unnecessary scheduling problems that arise within a given business day for the hospital staff.
