After reading the Unit 8 materials, discuss the role case management plays in effective substance abuse treatment. Include the following: The role of the counselor in case management. The counselor and case manager work together as a team to assist the client. Once a client has started counseling, if a concern arises, the counselor will notify the case manager to adjust a treatment plan if necessary. Many times, during counseling sessions, some specific information regarding relationships, living situations, medical coverage, employment, mental health concerns, etc. may arise and will need to be addressed before a client is discharged from treatment. Working as a team, the counselor and case manager can ensure a client’s success in the community. The counselor and case manager can discuss with the client any new or uncovered issues that will need to be addressed and how to go about adjusting the treatment plan accordingly. Why case management is effective in substance-abuse treatment. As a case manager, it is my job to assess the client’s needs and ensure that they are all met while in treatment, transition to outpatient treatment, and ability to survive a sober lifestyle in the community. When interviewing and assessing a client for treatment it is important to ask the right questions to ensure the correct treatment path and to address all social aspects of the client’s life. For example, if the client is homeless, this will need to be addressed before they leave the inpatient facility, the possibility of a halfway house or a recovery house may be an outpatient option until proper housing can be ascertained. The case manager works closely with the counselor, therapist, and peer support teams as well as a psychiatrist to ensure that all aspects of a client’s life are addressed to ensure the best outcomes. The difference between case management and therapy. A therapist talks to the individual to address the reason behind the substance abuse as well as triggers and coping skills to assist them with sober living skills. A case manager uses the information provided by the client, therapist, counselor, peer support team, and psychiatrist to reinforce that the client has all the resources and community connections needed to ensure they remain sober. The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) says that a case manager completes an “assessment in accordance with The ASAM Criteria, 2013 as an evaluation of an individual’s strengths, resources, preferences, limitations, problems, and needs and determines priorities for an individual’s treatment. A LOCA is a face-to-face interview to ascertain the treatment and treatment-related needs of an individual based on the degree and severity of substance use and the treatment and treatment-related needs of the individual based on the six dimensions of The ASAM Criteria.” (DDAP, 2020 to 2025) References:
