In this week's reflection I’m reflecting on seminar content, weekly lectures and the core training certification. What stood out to me this week was the different methods that can go into gathering information for a study, As Dr. N has mentioned in lecture, they were a part of an Indigenous study which the information gathering was based on land methodes, they would build a fire and sit around it as stories were told, teachings were also held and interviews were conducted. Dr. N also mentioned how art can tell a story and help with research, as they conducted a study with indigenous students to help look at what their future beholds not just their historical past, in this way helping to acknowledge their past yet not view them only based on what occurred historically. What was new to me this week was overall looking at gathering original data from proven methods to give us unbiased results for something that might have already been studied, even though I can assume most of this is self explanatory, I personally have never been a part of research so this is all expanding my knowledge with conducting proper research. What was not so new was some of the content touched on in the core training given to us as seminar content, as we further reviewed the importance of ethically conducting research it is apparent that ethics need to be considered with every step to a study, this ensures the safety of the participant and researcher as well as giving more credibility to the study itself as it helps to lower the risk of the information being skewed or bias being implemented. How I want this content to impact the way I learn is to help me be as aware as possible of what would be the best information gathering method for a group I’m trying to study. I would like to be apart of the Guelph Family Health Study in the summer, although I'm not completely aware of what role I'll be holding, I would still like to be informed prior to the study with who I will be conducting research on, this will help me to prior understanding if there is a different info gather methode I think would work best or if the method already used is the most sufficient Lastly what else I want to learn about these topics is I would like to continue getting more insight with not only about the qualitative ways for gathering data yet also the quantitative methods and when it's best to use them, like would certain studies benefit more from a quantitative focused approach rather than a qualitative one. How I would pursue learning more about this is looking at the studies given to us by Dr. N and seeing if there's other studies out there looking at the same concept yet focusing more on a quantitative approach. I can also look at studies that use a combined qualitative and quantitative focussed approach.
