Your Gut! Diseases and Disorders of the Digestive System
The
digestive system plays a critical role in how our body
takes in and processes
food.
Organs of the digestive system are usually referred to as “your gut.” It is
also the beginning of the process in which our body receives nourishment.
Understanding this process can be
helpful when communicating with patients or
when
analyzing charts for assigning the correct medical codes.
If you had to
explain the point at which the digestive process actually begins and one related
disease or disorder, how would you describe it? Be sure to use your medical
terms

The digestive system is described as a long twisted tube known as the
gastrointestinal tract. The passageway of the GI tract consists of the mouth,
esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. Fun fact if
you didn't know: the small intestine is 5.5 meters/ 15 feet longer than the
large intestines. The digestive system must be carefully handed when
consuming various nutrients you eat and/or drink such as proteins, fats, and
carbohydrates. These are highly recommended to be consumed properly.
Proteins break into amino acids. Fats which are lipids break into fatty acids
and glycerol. Carbohydrates break into sugar.
Be mindful that your lifestyle along with what you put into your body can
factor into how your digestive system operates. Whether it’s your diet,
tobacco use, or stress levels, you should be firm with yourself not to take it
lightly.
A common disease is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Before going
into detail, let’s break down what gastroesophageal means:
Prefix: gastro means stomach
Combined vowels: esophag/e means esophagus
Suffix: al means pertaining to
For a disease like GERD which is very common, it's an uncomfortable
pressure like heartburn. If you have ever experienced acid reflux, you know
that some of your favorite foods are instantly restricted. This chronic disease
is a stomach acid that irritates your food pipe-lining also described as that
long twisted tube. With the right motivation and support, you need to
carefully eat reasonable foods that are not acidic. You must be willing to limit
those harmful inputs. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is temporary for most.
One main thing to avoid is lying down right after eating. It's a habit for those
after a long day. That discomfort from the stomach acid transfers to your
esophagus where it will eventually lead to precancerous changes in its
lining.

Digestion is the process in which the body breaks down food into nutrients.
This process technically begins when food is inserted into the mouth and
broken down by chewing. This process is purely so food can fit into the next
piece of the digestive process. Next chewed food makes its way down the
esophagus and into the stomach, where it is broken down even further by
stomach acids. Then this broken-down food makes its way into the small
intestine. I would say that this is when digestion truly begins as the small
intestine does most of the digestion that occurs in this process by mixing
the food with different enzymes and bile to absorb nutrients. The enzymes
are made by the pancreas, and the bile is provided by your
gallbladder. After this food makes its way into the large intestine, where all
remaining water and nutrients are absorbed. Finally, all leftover matter that
the body couldn’t absorb exits as waste through the anus.
A disorder that can occur in the digestive system is cholecystitis. The
definition cholecystitis I found reads as, “cholecystitis is swelling and
irritation of the gallbladder”. Which can be pieced together by breaking
down the term itself as chole (Bile) - cyst (Bladder) - it is (Inflammation).
So, I would describe this disorder simply by saying, the bile bladder is
inflamed.
