Letitia,
Helping clients identify their problems is essential because it will determine the success of treatment
and assist them with specific tools to use when problems arise. Counselors must have strong listening
and problem-solving skills to provide the best care for their clients. Sometimes it can be challenging for a
client to identify the specific problem or why they are struggling to work through it, so it is up to the
counselor to help them through the process. Counselors must build a healthy therapeutic alliance with
their clients to get them to where they feel comfortable going in-depth with information during the
session. Sometimes it will take time for the counselor to probe and reflect during discussions because it
provides direction and focuses on the problem (Egan et al., 2019).
