2 Discussion B One area of interest within ABA is the utilization of positive reinforcement to shape behavior (Cooper et al., 2019). Positive reinforcement involves offering a reinforcement or reward when a desired behavior is exhibited. The approach can be used successfully in various settings, such as healthcare, education and business. ABA goal is to increase desireable behaviors and reduce undesireable one by identifying the precise consequences and antecedents that maintain those behaviors. An example of a positive reinforcement application in ABA is the utilization of token economies. Token economies include providing points taken to people for exhibiting desired behaviors, which could be exchanged for privileges and rewards. Token economies are used successfully in various settings, including prisons, schools and mental health facilities. One article that may be reviewed in Applied Behavior Analysis International is Incentivizing physical activity using token reinforcement with preschool children ” by Patel et al., 2019 this article explains a study that utilized a token economy in order to intensify exercise behavior in preschool students. The research found that utilizing the token economies efficiently increased exercise behavior and maintained the impact over time. The source supports the dimensions and goals of ABA by demonstrating the efficiency of using positive reinforcement to shape a behavior. The utilization of a token economy is precisely consistent with the principle of positive reinforcement, which is the core ABA principle. The resources also highlight the significance of using evidence-based ABA interventions, another key aspect of the field. Overall, the utilization of the token economies to intensify exercise behavior in university students was a promising ABA application. The research supports the utilization of
3 positive reinforcement in shaping behavior and demonstrates the efficiency of evidence-based intervention in ABA. References Cooper, J. O., Heron, T. E., & Heward, W. L. (2020). Applied behavior analysis . Pearson UK.
