GEOG 101 2. Map Analysis Questions In approximately 100 - 200 words (total for both questions), respond to the following questions: 1. Identify the portions of the country that have the highest and lowest levels of child growth failure. Are they rural or urban areas? Has there been conflict or natural disasters in these areas in recent years? Why might these factors contribute to child growth failure? (10 points) The region with the lowest child growth failure rate is Addis Ababa, which is the capital of Ethiopia, making it about as urban as an area as possible. The region with the highest child growth failure rate is Amhara, which is a rural region. Despite having very favorable climactic and geographic conditions, this region has a very high child growth failure rate probably due to political and military turmoil, with a coup d’etat being attempted in recent years there. 2. In this exercise, we looked at a different scale than the first mapping exercise by focusing on the subnational scale. Why is it important to consider multiple scales when studying issues like hunger? How would our understanding of hunger be impacted if we only considered the global scale? Vice-versa, what would we lose if we only looked at the subnational scale? (10 points) It’s important to consider the subnational scale in addition to the global scale because many times, the entire nation as a whole isn’t struggling, but rather certain groups or regions will be struggling, pulling the entire country down in the global scale. Without looking at the subnational scale, you can’t really tell the exact cause or source of a country’s struggles. In this case, without looking at the subnational scale, a person wouldn’t be able to deduce that a lot of the child growth failure happens in the Amhara Region due to internal violence and unrest. Someone who didn’t look at the subnational scale would just assume that Ethiopia as a whole is struggling to meet its citizens’ needs, when in reality there are regions like Somali and Addis Ababa that are actually doing very well.
