Block 4 Submission Form
Implementation Planning Guide
Thus far in your PLTW Launch Classroom Teacher
Training, you’ve experienced several modules, while
focusing on the PLTW Launch experience, the APB
instructional approach, the PLTW Launch student
experience, and the role of the PLTW Launch
classroom teacher. Now you will explore modules on
your own in preparation for implementation in your
classroom.
This Implementation Planning Guide helps you begin to plan to facilitate your module(s). The following sections walk you through the planning process: Introduction, Connections to Standards and Curriculum Framework, Preparing for Facilitation, and Next Steps. Use the links to jump to the sections.
Part 1: Introduction
Part 2: Connections to Standards and Curriculum Framework
Part 3: Preparing for Facilitation
Part 4: Next Steps
Part 1: Introduction
PLTW Launch modules have been designed to connect to the national standards—
including science, English Language/Arts, Mathematics, and computer science standards.
As part of the planning process, you will explore standards connections. Each grade level
includes multiple modules, each with their own content focus. It is important to become familiar with all the modules in your grade level to help make decisions about which modules to implement with your students. To do this, you will use the PLTW Launch Module Descriptions document that provides a brief introduction to each module. You will
then choose a module that you would like to implement in your classroom and explore it at a deeper level.

Now, let’s get started by exploring the modules in your grade level. Please keep in mind that your exploration is just starting today. This guide will continue to help you plan for implementation after training ends.
Action Items
Open PLTW Launch Module Descriptions
and review the descriptions for each module in your grade level. If you teach multiple grade levels, choose any grade you wish.
Access PLTW Launch Module-specific PD Resources
. Locate Implementing Planning Resources
in the Launchpad.
Access the APB Overviews
for the grade level you are exploring. Note
For the purposes of this exploration, the APB Overviews have been bundled into one document by grade level. To gain a deeper understanding of the content, review the description of each activity, project, and problem for your chosen module. Based on your review, which module would you like to explore further? You will focus on this module as you complete this submission form.
We are focusing on animal adaptations
Access and watch the Module Introduction video for the module you chose. Note
Remember that the Module Introduction videos are in the Module-specific PD Resources.
Write a note about what you learned about the module.
I am learning about animal adaptations and environment
Part 2: Connections to Standards and
Curriculum Framework To prepare to implement a PLTW Launch module, the
first step is to explore the Connections to Standards and Curriculum Framework. These documents offer details about the expected learning outcomes for the module. Reviewing these resources should be part of your planning for each module you facilitate. Connections to Standards
Standards are the foundation for what is taught in a classroom. They outline what students are expected to learn and be able to do as a result of participating in learning © 2023 Project Lead The Way, Inc.

experiences. When you explore the standards connections for a module first, you have a big picture of the knowledge and skills that the module addresses. We understand that your state might not align to the national bodies of standards called out in the connections to standards document. That’s why PLTW Launch is designed for flexible implementation. If your state does not address these standards, you’ll spend time comparing your standards to those identified for the module. Remember that PLTW Launch modules can be implemented at any PreK–5 grade level based on your standards. If you implement a module at a different grade level than indicated, you might need to make modifications to meet the needs of your students. Action Items
Select the Teacher Guide for your chosen module.
To locate the Connections to Standards, access Connections to Standards and Curriculum Framework
in the Teacher Guide Table of Contents.
Open and review the Connections to Standards for this module.
Locate your state science standards for comparison. Most states’ science standards can be found on their Department of Education website.
Compare your state’s science standards to those addressed in PLTW Launch. Consider the following questions:
•
As identified in the Connections to Standards document for this module, how do the standards compare with your state’s science standards for the grade level?
3.LS3.C.1 – Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular ecosystem some organisms- based on structural adaptations or behaviors- can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot.
•
If applicable, identify three or four state standards that are not addressed in the Connections to Standards for the module.

•
Think about how you currently address the standards that are not covered in the module. What resources do you have that could be integrated with the module?
We could do social studies curriculum with the introduction to geography •
As you think about what is addressed in this module, what math, ELA, and/or social studies connections come to mind that would integrate well with the content?

We can PLTW launch science curriculum to integrate science topics into all other areas of learning Curriculum Framework
The Curriculum Framework document is a valuable planning tool that offers information related to the learning objectives and knowledge and skills developed through the module. You will use this resource throughout the module to understand the learning expectations and different ways you can assess student learning in each APB. The framework includes three stages of learning:
Desired Results (Stage 1)
identifies what students should know and should be able to do as a result of completing the learning experiences in the module.
Evidence (Stage 2)
and Learning Plan (Stage 3)
connect the learning plan for the module with opportunities for students to demonstrate evidence of learning. This section includes a description of what students are doing in each APB with assessment opportunities that are tied to the corresponding learning objectives and
knowledge and skills identified in Stage 1.
Exploring the Curriculum Framework before you examine the Teacher Guide gives you a high-level understanding of the stages to curriculum planning, assessment, and instruction. After you have explored the Curriculum Framework, you’ll be ready to determine how the module connects to the required standards for your school.

Community Groups
As a PLTW Launch Classroom Teacher, you will be enrolled in PLTW
Community groups that allow you to network with other classroom
teachers. If you do not have access to the Community tool after
successful completion of CTT, contact the PLTW Solution Center at
solutioncenter@pltw.org or 877.335.PLTW (7589).
How to Access Community
Instructional Resources
Log in to myPLTW. Select Community
. Select the course title under My Groups. Note that this is your Classroom Teacher Training Community group, which allows you to practice the features of Community and keep in contact with members of your cohort. After successful completion of CTT, you will gain access to other Community groups related to the PLTW Launch modules. To become proficient in using the Community tool, practice the following:
•
Add a post
•
Create a poll or question
•
Respond to a post another participant made
•
Upload a file and download a file
Before you teach a module, it is a good idea to review the posts in Community to gather helpful information from teachers who have taught the module. You can search for topics
that have been tagged to quickly identify posts related to your needs or interests.

If you have specific questions or comments, Community groups offer a great way to connect with the PLTW Launch network. When you post comments or questions, remember to use “tags” to identify the topics you address in your post.
Additional Questions to Consider
You have taken the first steps to PLTW Launch implementation as you:
Explored the alignment of a module using the Connections to Standards and Curriculum Framework
Reviewed the Teacher Resources
Explored additional professional development resources available to you Before you implement a module, you need to continue this planning process. As you continue in your career as a teacher and have the opportunity to implement PLTW Launch in your classroom, understand that your journey is unique. Throughout PLTW Launch Classroom Teacher Training, you’ve probably thought of several questions for your school administrator. Following are several “Next Steps” questions that teachers find beneficial as they continue their journey to implement PLTW Launch in their school. Take time to record your thoughts to these questions. Use the space provided to consider
the questions posed, record your own ideas, and add questions you’ve formulated during
training. We’ve suggested some of the most common topics with questions to focus your thinking,
but feel free to add more questions or talking points in the “Other” section.
Note
You may not be able to answer these questions at this time, during CTT, and that’s OK. Review the questions and write down your thoughts or any additional questions. After training, meet with your Administrator or Lead Teacher to discuss
these questions. Action Items
