The TED Talk speaker's topic is called the power of believing that you can improve. The speaker's name is Carol Dweck she is a Psychologist. She also researches "growth mindset" the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. She will go over two ways to think about a problem that's slightly too hard to solve. The purpose of this TED Talk is to help people achieve success and how it is important and the belief that you can improve upon your abilities. The speaker wants the audience to develop a growth mindset that helps regard failures and obstructions as just part of a learning process and gives inspiration and to learn new skills. Rhetorical Situations Who is the speaker's target audience? Children are her target audience for this TED Talk, but I also feel that this can be for anyone who is in school or just in life and is trying to achieve their goals. This TED Talk is to help people to develop their growing mindset. It is extremely important to know how to focus on a growth mindset to overcome the fear of failure. The speaker heard about a high school in Chicago that gives "Not Yet" as a grade, instead of failing a student. Sometimes scoring an "F" can demoralize students and hold them back from the learning process. It's very important to encourage students to cultivate a mindset of growth that helps them to think, analyze, learn, and correct their
mistakes. What is the context of the TED Talk? What historical or current event information is presented (or missing) to help the audience understand the argument? The power of believing that you can improve growth in the mindsets of children is very crucial. When they are challenged with a task that might be slightly too hard are assigned to students as a whole, there are two different outcomes expected. Some students would react in a positive way saying things like 'I love challenge'. While other students would feel that given a challenge is terrible and their intelligence is being judged from the fear of failing. The two different mindsets are labeled as growth mindset and understanding that their abilities can be developed to the fixed mindset. Concerned about being judged upon their abilities to do well and eventually fail. Students with a fixed mindset repeatedly avoid or disengage from problematic activities. Sometimes they look for someone who does worse than they do, so they can feel better about themselves. But students with the growth mindset engage intensely their brains are on fire with their difficulties and learn from their mistakes and they correct it. What rhetorical appeals (reason, emotion, credibility) does the speaker use to help strengthen the argument? The speaker talks about how important it is to value the thought that two different mindsets can have. The speaker speaks about how we should praise the process that kids engage in, their effort, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance, and their improvement. She also stated that the process of praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient. A lot of emotions take place when the process takes place with positive cultural surroundings, instead of nervousness of being judged or incorrect. It encourages more effort and engagement with challenging tasks over a longer time and more flexibility. The power of believing that you can improve children who do worse than they do. If they have a growth mindset, the difficulties are seen as a challenge to overcome, to learn from. The theory and study have specific flaws only for the sole reason that results and compulsory achievements are used as incentives in people's lives. The studies Carol Dweck talks about help the evidence have more credibility. What additional information do you want to know about the topic? As most of us know how important it is to guide children with growing mindsets to the right path, we often get too strict and forbid the growing minds. I would read in-depth about how to avoid certain situations. We've all been through these situations and before watching the TED Talk, I wouldn't have thought about the importance of being there for your child as a support, rather than getting angry if they fail an exam. I would also like to study more about growth mindset see the transition of my children's grades before they start to decline, and find better ways to help them improve. Presentation
How does the speaker introduce the topic and engage the audience? The introduction of the topic by the speaker is eye-catching. The title is on top of the list, personally. "The power of believing that you can improve," speaks for itself. Knowing how to improve the skills for yourself and those growing around you, is tremendously powerful. CarolDweck introduces the topic to the audience in a strong way by explaining the importance of knowing different mindsets. The speaker's TED talk concluded with scientific facts and some images comparing the two mindsets. The speaker also talked about how the information has helped a lot of students who think about this theory. They also explain the frustrations of believing that they've wasted their time and appreciate that Dr. Dweck's research is based upon real scientific facts. The speaker talks about how abilities should be human rights among all children as they value what they are provided with, more after this theory has been applied. All children should live in places where there is room for growth and glowing their abilities to raise in their future with a stronger mindset.
