Watch the following Ted Talk:

emily_bobryk_ozaki_is_the_pressure_to_be_a_well_rounded_teen_challenging_gen_z_s_mental_wellness
The following questions ask you to evaluate the Ted Talk you watched as well as yourself as a learner. Please answer the following questions honestly. Use examples where necessary. Review the rubric for category expectations.
What is the speaker’s main message? What are some of the techniques they use to persuade the viewer?
The major message of the speaker is that Gen Z teenagers believe they must do all possible to prepare for their future. Teens are so focused on the outside because of this pressure that they neglect to focus on themselves. Because of this pressure, teenagers are so focused on the outside that they fail to focus on themselves.
The speaker's first strategy is to utilize analogies to connect with the audience. One example of this is at the
start of the presentation when she discusses her school life and demonstrates to the audience how comparable it is to work in a legitimate job. She also employs the strategy of evoking emotional responses in her audience. She mentions feeling pressured to be good at everything to be a well-rounded adolescent as an example of this. She talks personally about how she is bad at English and math but, due to the expectation of being, flawless at everything, she must master English to exceed this expectation. She attempts to show her anxiousness by describing glum circumstances that many in the audience may relate to. Third, she uses strong language to imply the gravity of the issue. During the presentation, the speaker describes a voice in her brain informing her that if she
is not doing anything important at any given time, she is "useless" and "wasting time." These lines convey to the audience the mental exhaustion that many teens experience.
As a fellow Gen Z, can you relate to Emily’s arguments? Provide specific examples from your own life.
As a fellow Gen Z, I can identify with Emily's comments about how people's expectations put pressure on me and make me feel confused. My parents and instructors, for example, remind me how crucial it is for me to do extraordinarily well in school to have a happy life. They say this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I'll have to work hard to reap the benefits. Having these sorts of remarks made to me causes me to fear about the future and can easily divert me from having pleasure. Another example is how I should maintain the status quo that many of my relatives and friends have accomplished. My parents offer me instances of individuals they know who went on
to get a decent degree or a well-paying career, and they tell me how difficult it is to follow in their footsteps. Meeting the expectations of those I know requires me to work hard, leaving me psychologically fatigued.
Reflecting on your experience and feedback on the presentation you completed in this course, identify two specific areas of improvement that you will apply to this culminating presentation. In addition, what strategies can you use to achieve your goal?
The first recommendation I will improve on is to write a more descriptive statement so that everyone understands what I'm talking about. The second area in which I will improve is my delivery during the presentation. I normally speak quickly, which might cause me to mix up how I utter a word, resulting in my words
having little impact on the listener. This time, I'll attempt to talk more slowly and clearly so that the audience understands what I'm saying. The major strategies I'll use to enhance how I speak to the class will be to rehearse my presentation regularly so that I can speak to the class without fear. Referencing the facts and evidence that I will utilize throughout the presentation will be the approach I will employ to generate a clear message. This will assist me in writing a descriptive message that will include references to my body paragraphs.

ENG 2D Culminating – Planning Sheets
Statement Choice: In my opinion, the ultimate test of a person’s morality is his/her use of power. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth
,
Macbeth’s moral image was shattered when he gained power as he started to abuse it by killing many that wish to take his power for his own gain. In Liam O’Flaherty’s The
Sniper
short story, the main character uses his power for his country, showing no remorse for anyone. For / Against (indicate one)

Summarize:
The statement made about power can be connected to William Shakespeare’s Macbeth
.
Macbeth was an honest man with no evil intentions, but witches prophesized that he will be king
Macbeth started to seek being king along with his wife, leading them to kill the current king
Once Macbeth gained power, his true ethics can be on display, killing many rivals so that he can keep the king
Macbeth’s thirst for power led him to be ignorant with caused him to be defeated by the English army How does this
piece support
my opinion?
This piece supports my opinion as the actions that Macbeth did during king showed
his righteousness when given power.
At the beginning of the play, many saw Macbeth as an honored hero, fighting for his kingdom
At the end, when given power, many can see that Macbeth is selfish as he uses his power for his own sake, not for others
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth
can be a direct example of the statement made about power
Evidence:
What quotations
from the text or media support my
opinion? (at least 2)
Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown / And put a barren scepter in my grip, / Thence to be wrenched with an unlineal hand, / No son of mine succeeding. If ’t be so, / For
Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind; / For them the gracious Duncan have I murdered; / Put rancors in the vessel of my peace / Only for them; and mine eternal jewel /
Given to the common enemy of man, / To make them kings,
the seed of Banquo kings! / Rather than so, come fate into the list, / And champion me to th' utterance.” (3.1.64-75).
“
The castle of Macduff I will surprise, / Seize upon Fife, give to th' edge o' th' sword / His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls / That trace him in his line.” (4.1.156-160)
Useful messages / character development / conflict / literary devices
Macbeth becomes jealous at Banquo because of how Banquo’s sons are going to be the next king
Macbeth becomes angered to the point of
having the idea to murder Banquo and his son
Macbeth becomes even
more enveloped with being king due to how he killed his best friend
When Macbeth finds out about Macduff betraying him, he orders to murder
Macduff’s family
Connections to relevant course themes
The play Macbeth
can be connected to ambition due to how Macbeth’s motivation is because of his desire. This desire becomes bad for him as it makes him more willing to do bad deeds to complete those desires
The play Macbeth
can be connected to guilt as his loses his sense of reality because
of how he killed Banquo. When Macbeth killed Banquo, he started seeing the ghost
of Banquo due to his sense of guilt.

Information:
O’Flaherty, Liam. “The Sniper.” Collected Stories, The New Leader, 1923.
Summarize:
In Dublin, Ireland, during the Irish Civil War. A Republic sniper sits on a rooftop near a bridge.
While eating, an enemy sniper fires a bullet that lands on the parapet of the roof
he is standing on.
While this is happening, a heavily armored vehicle descends the road, and an elderly woman comes around the corner and talks to the man in the armored vehicle about the Republican sniper.
The sniper kills the man in the vehicle alongside the women
The sniper and the enemy sniper then engage in a sniper duel, resulting in the republican sniper killing of the enemy sniper
The enemy sniper, believing he is no longer in danger, stands up on his roof and, overcome with pride and happiness, shoots him dead with his pistol. Later,
he wants to find out who he killed. Shocking he had killed his own brother
How does this
piece support
my opinion?
Since this story is set during wartime, the sniper frequently encounters conflicts with others, forcing him to make decisions based on the authority he possesses.
With his power, he uses it to kill others for his own benefits in the civil war
Finally, the sniper chooses violence against all his problems, disregarding morals and showing no mercy with the power he possesses.
Evidence:
What quotations
from the text or media support my
opinion? (at least 2)
“
The sniper raised his rifle and fired. The head fell heavily on the turret wall. The woman darted toward the side street. The sniper fired again. The woman whirled round and fell with a shriek into the gutter.”
“He looked at the smoking revolver in his hand, and with an
oath he hurled it to the roof at his feet. The revolver went off with a concussion and the bullet whizzed past the sniper's head. He was frightened back to his senses by the shock. His nerves steadied. The cloud of fear scattered from
his mind and he laughed.”
Useful messages / character development / conflict / literary devices
While fighting the other sniper, he notices
a man in a turret and a
woman talking to that man.
The Sniper killed the enemy man and killed the women so that no one will know about

this incident
The conflict is how the Sniper is fighting this civil war for his and other peoples benefits. Connections to relevant course themes
The short story The Sniper can be connected to guilt whenever he kills the enemy sniper. When he uses his revolver to finish off the enemy sniper, he feels shocked and fear after killing the enemy sniper. He then feels remorse as he knows that this war is the reason, he must finish off people
The short story can also be connected to the statement integrity. When the republican sniper is at his weakest point, he starts thinking critically against his opponent, with a little trick against him. This allows him to win the battle and survive for another day.
This can be connected to integrity as he deceives the opponent for his common good, being able to survive for another day
