Unit 1 Writing Assignment
The book that was assigned to us to read this week What Great Teachers Do Differently, I
know that I need to change a few different approaches in my teaching style. As I was reading this
book I saw where he talked a lot about principals and how they were handling things. I think sometimes principals lose the sense of being in the classroom when they have been out of it for so long, but I do listen to them on things that I think require an administrator’s knowledge. This is also stated in the book that great teachers resemble great principals (Whitaker, T. 2020) I do have some inconsistencies in my classroom because of not being there at the beginning of school, getting hired and being there for three weeks and then getting sick and not being there again. The things that I think I must work on are how to handle some of the behaviors that some students exhibit, the phone policy, and not accepting late work except when they are absent. Their grades suffered a lot with all these changes the last semester. I also felt bad and went back and gave everyone extra points because everyone had a low grade. I want to be more straightforward with how I tend to handle some of these issues. First, the behavior that some of my students exhibit in the classroom of them using words that do not need to be said in the classroom and instead of writing them up for saying those words, I just look at them and say watch your mouth. The students will then say, “my bad, I forget you were sitting there.” I should go back over our classroom and school rules and make sure that they know that I will not tolerate any more of the behavior or they will have consequences. I want to make sure that the students know that I want them in the classroom learning but this classroom is
not a place to talk like you are talking to friends. I will also tell them that we can talk about anything that they want to talk about within reason after the classroom work is done. This will
also teach them that the way that they act in the classroom should be how they handle themselves
at a place of employment. I do see the ramifications of not following through on what I say I am going to do. I do see when I tell them that they will get detention if I hear them talking like that again and they just
look at me like yeah right. It has been difficult because of me not starting with them at the beginning of the year to getting sick and not being there again they have had so many different rules and not one person has held them accountable for their actions and I want to believe that making them accountable will help them become better students and employees since I teach college and career readiness. The other inconsistency that I have is with the cell phones being out in class when they should be doing their work. The grades in my classes last semester have been not so good because I had to wait late work or them not doing it at all. I put a lot of stress on myself because I
was behind putting grades into the gradebook. The main reason we were having late work is because they would be on their phones all class and then they did not get their work done. I would say ok get it to me by the next class period and then they would drag it out and I told them
I am not going to do that anymore. I told them today that there will be no cell phones out until your work is done and turned in. I will stick to that and hopefully I will see an improvement in their grades. I believe in every one of them but when the phones are out then I cannot get them to
turn in their work. Again, I see how having phones out in class is hurting them in the long run because it is like glued to their hip. I also gave them a choice today you either put your phone up where I do not see them, or I will start taking them up at the beginning of class and until you show me that your work is done, I will keep your phone. I want to make sure that my students know that I am

there for them to learn how to navigate from high school to college or high school to a career. If they cannot focus and get things done, then it will be harder for them to achieve success. The relationship that I have with the students will help me achieve what I want to achieve in the classroom. The student’s success in academics as well as life is what matters to me the most. In the book What Great Teachers Do Differently, the relationship you have with your students will be the foundation of your classroom (Whitaker, T. 2020). This is true because if you did not have
a good foundation then you will not be able to have consistency in all that you do in the classroom. The late classwork was a problem last semester because if they did not do it in the classroom then I told them to get it to me by next class period then I would keep telling them that
and then when it got to the end of the nine weeks and the end of the semester, I told them it was too late. I still took late work right up until I turned in my grades for last semester. The students’ grades suffered because of this. By not having a classroom where I can post my rules and consequences it is tough that I must keep telling them repeatedly that I will not be taking late work this semester at all unless you were absent. Accepting late work not only stressed the students out but it also put a lot of pressure on me to keep asking them are they going to turn it in. My policy from here until the end of the semester will be NO LATE WORK, NO EXCEPTIONS. This is eliminating stress on me as well as them trying to remember what is due. If they get it done in the class, then they will not have to worry about it outside of class. I will also remind them that they do have a copy of the rules of the classroom and that they signed it acknowledging them. The grades of the students will likely improve because they will have to complete the assignment in the classroom.
The student’s success can be measured by their grades and the improvement that I will see after keeping true to my word, if you break the rules, there are consequences. I will also talk with the students and ask them if they have improved in themselves after I have been consistent with how I handle the situation of a student breaking the rules that are set. This will show them that their voice matters in my classroom, and I will get more out of them because they will know that I care. I have started rereading the First Days of School
, how to be an Effective Teacher
, and in the book, it talks about how to teach your students to follow classroom procedures and that is exactly what I need to do because what I have been doing in the classroom has not worked. It states in the book, that I need to have planned out my procedures and make sure that the students understand those procedures. (Wong, H. & Wong, R., 2009) Keeping my students involved in something will keep them too busy to take out their phone. I cannot wait to start implementing my new way of teaching and keeping myself accountable for sticking to my rules and procedures on using words that they should not, having their phones out, not accepting late work. I will make sure that I write down the improvements that are made by the students so that they can see why we need to have these rules and procedures in place and why if you break them you will have consequences.
