Laghari 1 Ishman Laghari Pete Tijerina ENGL 1312 2 5/16/2021 Argumentative Course Progress: Final The broader focus of our life during this time is to let up the negativity and use our energy to overcome practical challenges, such as virtual learning. After attending the first year of college online, out of all my classes English has been the most productive. In high school when classes were face to face English class was sometimes slow and most times are taken very casually. Through virtual learning, education was more flexible, and discussions were engaging. English classes in high school involve guided classwork and lack professional writing. The teacher usually assigns a specific topic, and the focus is on the style of writing rather than the content, the curriculum is also divided into test preparation and reading of authorized texts. The topics students are given in high school are also very bleak and informal because moving on to the next subject is more important. Writing in college is more personal and has a lot of flexibility. College professors want to comprehend students' strong individual thoughts on paper. With the privilege to choose texts I am passionate about; I have excelled in every piece of work I wrote this year. Many students fall behind in college English because of their past high school classrooms where papers were reviewed by peers and specific writing and research skills were not developed. Our high-school teachers led most of the classroom discussions and dropped hints here and there to make us think we are smart. It is hard getting students to participate, logistically looking at the teacher to student ratio, that is why many teachers prefer class discussions. “Every
Laghari 2 English teacher teaches 5 sections of English, each section has approximately 25 students... that still means a three-page formal essay assignment would translate into 375 pages of student prose to be read, critiqued, and evaluated” (Kim Brooks, 2011). Analyzing this information, it is safe to say that composition teachers can offer more time and commentary to their students. It is also not fair to put all the blame on high-school teachers as their job requires maximum work for minimum pay. “Headache-inducing attention to detail, wheelbarrows full of grading, revision after revision, conferences with teary-eyed students. Who would not prefer to talk about books, stories, or poems? Problem is the hard grueling work to be done doesn't go away” (Kim Brooks, 2011) Virtual learning allowed me to have a pliable schedule and the classes were to the point. “Time efficiency is another strength brought by the online learning format” (University of Illinois). Conveniently students can access their assignments anytime and anywhere. Access to class discussions, course materials, and lectures is also available 24/7. This provided accessibility is suitable for those who might have missed a class or want to revisit and reflect on ideas before completing an assignment. Despite what many people think, online learning is better than an in-person classroom. “Research has shown that students in online learning performed better than those receiving face- to-face instruction, but it has to be done right” (Christine Greenhow, 2020). Some of the best elements of online learning are that students get to go at their own pace, time, and think profoundly and acutely about the subject matter. Technological features such as online chat, discussion forms, repayable video lessons, have provided me with the scope to be engaged within the classroom. The knowledge I brought with me from high school might be patchy, but I
Laghari 3 am confident in myself that I did great this year facing the challenge of virtual education. Social and instructional support is what all students need to be successful with or without technology.
