Brezovsky 1 Allison Brezovsky Teel English III 26 October 2016 Moral Education When I was born, my parents acknowledged that I was helpless and that I needed them and their guidance throughout my childhood, teen years, and possibly in the years to come. I was to be taught how to live intellectually and with morals such as honesty, responsibility, and respect for others. These morals would help me to live productively, individually, and be a contributing member of society. Many theorists believe that children would become fully acceptable people if the adult world would get out of the way. Through my biblical beliefs and the upbringing at home, I believe that society may engulf me with trials and tribulations, but I will succeed to these by relying on the faith I have in my religion as well as the tools that my parents instilled in me. As a young child, I was taught to live by the golden rule, “therefore all things whatsoever ye would men should do. To you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (New International Version, Matt. 7.12). I apply this with my family, friends, teachers, co-workers, and even strangers I pass on the street. Being taught to be responsible for myself including my actions have made me someone that I believe is a contributing member of society. It is my responsibility to attend school, participate in household chores, and work my scheduled shifts at my job. Anyone that you ask who knows me will tell you that I am a sincerely honest person. This does not mean that I am brutally honest but if asked for opinion or question my beliefs will get an honest response
Brezovsky 2 from me. I remember as a child that being honest resulted in a much lesser punishment and in a way, was rewarded for the moral aspect of this. Once, I hit my brother and when my mom asked what had happened, I told her that I hit him because he was teasing me. Although she did not condone the behavior, she was appreciative of the honesty I portrayed and my punishment was not as harsh had I lied on the reason why I had done what I had. Many of the moral traits that I have learned have been from my family members through their guidance or by their actions. I was raised the good old Texas way, to respect others. “Yes ma’am,” is a phrase that I grew up with. I was given the power to choose what I believed in. My moral compass relies a lot in the Bible for direction. For me, the Bible is an instruction manual on how we should live our life and the rules we should follow. For any obstacle, I may encounter in my lifetime, I will rely on my parents’ advice and the word of the Bible to help me through it and to make the right decisions. Once, I had a friend that was doing things that I did not approve of. After seeking advice from my mom and filtering through my friendship with her verses my beliefs, I chose to end a seven-year friendship. Some things I have learned are through trial and error, learning them on my own. Something that I have learned on my own is that doing my homework last minute makes me tired the next day. I learned on my own because my parents wouldn’t be doing their job if they held my hand through every obstacle I encounter in life. With the above being stated, I learned from my parents, that my problems in life cannot be fixed by others, but can be handled through my faith in God. When I am learning how to become a successful adult, I research scriptures in the Bible to help me overcome any
Brezovsky 3 questions and doubts that I have as well as seeking advice from those who may have encountered the same issues, my parents. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (New International Version, Proverbs. 3. 5-6). It is important for me to gain my knowledge in life by believing that I am being raised to believe in a higher power as well as knowing that my parents want me to become the best that I can be so that the world has valuable, trustworthy, responsible adults carrying a legacy much greater than ourselves. Many have concern for moral education, hoping that if taught correctly, our generation can be the social glue that defines how individuals should live together.
