Final Project
After twenty-five plus years, multiple majors, and six different colleges/universities, I will complete my bachelor’s degree to ensure I am no longer passed over for promotions or salary increases due to lack of a bachelor’s degree. I will instill in my children the importance of education and help them realize that the world can put expected timelines and pressure on us. I want them to understand that life does not always go the way we expect or plan it to, so despite this, they can always get back on track if it’s something they genuinely want. Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies from Southern New Hampshire University will allow me to apply the majority of credits I have previously earned and put me back on track. When I receive that promotion or increase in salary in my current job, I will know I have succeeded. To ensure I stay on track, I have decided to keep an academic journal, and during each module, I will write at least once a week about what I have accomplished and how I am feeling. I will also include what is expected in the coming module. Including such things as was it a stressful week with home life or work? Was the coursework completed with ease or difficulty? How much time did it take to complete assignments? Am I maintaining realistic expectations of myself? By keeping a journal, I will be able to keep my anxiety and stress levels at a manageable level. Maintaining and managing my stress has always been a struggle for me. The journal entries will allow me to look at what might be causing me stress and then take action
to mitigate it before it becomes overwhelming. The journal will also provide me with the positive
feedback I need to stay focused and highlight my strengths; It can show how well I manage my time and how strong my organizational skills are and, in turn, remind me that I’m okay and things are going well.
3
My goal is to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies before 2023. I intend on
taking at least one course a term. If, after reviewing my journal from a couple of terms and my stress level and anxiety are at a manageable level, I may attempt adding a second course to a term. I feel this is a realistic goal since I need to complete 30 credits, and this will give me 11 terms to achieve my goal. This timeline will allow for those unexpected life obstacles that could happen or give me the flexibility to allow myself a break if I need it. I realized at an early age that I was different than the other kids I went to school with. In the third grade, I was diagnosed as dyslexic. The public education system in Philadelphia in the 70s and 80s was not equipped to teach in a manner that would be effective for me. During this time in my life, I developed my enduring skills of self-awareness/metacognition, time management/organizational skills, and empathy/emotional awareness. I would not have called them enduring skills, but the skills I need to survive. Metacognition is defined as understanding and awareness of one’s thought process or, simply put, by Larae Quy’s (2017) “Know What Makes You Tick.” Even today, I am continually
re-evaluating how I learn and what I need to do to succeed. I have discovered I am a visual and tactile learner, so when I had to know how the vascular system worked or the location of bones for an Anatomy and Physiology class, I outlined myself on a big piece of paper and started drawing and coloring. I am also big on mnemonics like R
O
Y
G
. B
I
V for the colors of the rainbow and the dispersion of visible light for a physics class and later for an art theory class for the color wheel. Flashcards are also a well-used tool I have learned works wonders for me. Getting what is in my head and putting it on paper is not something I look forward to. Writing papers for college courses or even lengthy emails can be a challenge. I will take my flashcards and write a sentence or two on them. When I think I am finished, I arrange my cards to make

sense and start the paper. We have also come a long way from my early days of only having a Speak -n-Spell to help me with spelling. Reading Aloud in Microsoft Word and Outlook, having papers read to me allows me to catch words I have left out or catch the words that spell check and grammar can sometimes miss. The words may be in my head but do not always make it on the paper.
If I had not developed strong time management/organization skills, I probably would not
be able to pass this class. I know how I learn, and I know what requires more time from me, like writing papers. Writing and organizing my flashcards and then allowing the extra time to formulate and edit the paper is a lengthy process for me. Regardless of past or future college courses, I know I need to start and prepare before it even begins. Online learning, although heavily paper-driven, allows me to start a week early and organize and see how much time I am going to need. I have created a rolling to-do list for my current job. I plan my days according to due dates, length of time it will take me, and work priority. If I do not design and carve out more time than it would typically require, I could have just sabotaged myself before even beginning.
Emotional awareness can be an excellent skill when working with people from different cultures and educational backgrounds aged 17 to 92. With years of retail work, being a certified nursing assistant, and even my current position, realizing where you are with your own emotions and empathizing with others who might be having challenges is invaluable. I learned early on in elementary and through High School how to ‘read’ my teachers. If they seemed to be having a particularly stressful day, I knew I had to come back at a later time to ask for what I needed. Knowing when to sit quietly and not rock the boat in a classroom with 33 other kids was huge, as
well as making sure I would stop and say hello and thank you and goodbye when the rest of the herd would blow in and out of class after class with the teachers receiving more than a nod if
5
they were lucky. I learned that giving respect and even a sympathetic glance or shaking my head at another kid who had made a snide remake went a long way, especially when I needed the extra
time for assignments. In developing my SMART goal choosing a concentration in Human Resource Essentials will align with my timeline of completing my BA.GA by year-end of 2023, but also utilize the enduring skills I already possess. Such courses from the SNHU course catalog like Human Relations in Admin (OL -125): The human relations skills that managers need to develop interaction skills that contribute directly to effective human resource management and the development of higher productivity are studied. Skill areas include leadership, motivation, communications, group dynamics, organizational development, management by objectives, and stress and time management. Students learn techniques for becoming more effective managers, subordinates, peers, and persons.
Employee & Labor Relations (OL-318): This course examines employee-
management relationships in both the union and non-union environments with an emphasis on best pr
actices.
These courses will only continue to reinforce my enduring skills. The enduring skill I struggle with at times is motivation. This can be a double-edged sword for me, and at times I need to work on curbing my enthusiasm, or I will run the risk of overloading and burning myself out. Despite all my struggles with the formal academic process, I have never lost the love of learning,
and at times I crave it. The journal I have committed myself to keep during this journey of completing my degree will provide me with the information I need that will either keep me on a
6
one-course per-term schedule or allow me to unleash some of that motivation and add an additional course occasionally.
Choosing the concentration in Human Resource Essentials to complete my bachelor’s degree from SNHU was logical. I currently work at a university providing human resource support for the second-largest department in their School of Arts and Sciences. I enjoy many things about my job, but the ability to help others fulfills me the most. The majority of us spend about a third of our day working, whether physically going to work or working remotely, so when questions or problems might occur, we all want to know that there is someone who can help answer our questions or, at the very least will guide us in the direction we need to go to find what we are looking for. The world of work and careers are constantly changing, especially within the last two years. The pandemic has caused many workers to reprioritize their lives. People are changing jobs unexpectedly, retiring earlier, and even switching between working remotely or going back into an office. Companies and organizations’ human resources departments continually facilitate and guide these changes. In an article from Cornish
(2021)
When the pandemic hit, the speed of change and uncertainty ahead called for the type of skill and application only HR professionals had to handle; steering businesses and leaders through crisis response and preparation, interpreting rapidly changing rules and legislation, dealing with the stress and pressure of entire workforces, and creating new and efficient ways of working. Even with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) in many business areas, the Human Resources sector will only minimally be affected. AI or ML could solve some repetitive tasks by sifting through hundreds of applications for keywords in resumes

to narrow down candidates or for the process of data collection. “
If properly integrated and supported at the C-level human resources can - and should - be across all things people and culture and should be considered as central to business and people growth.” (White, L, 2022 “as cited by Jeffries, J.2021”
)
The simple fact is that the Human Resource sector relies more on EQ and Softskills that AI or ML cannot replace. Continuing to expand on my Softskills by completing my BA General Studies degree with a concentration in Human Resources Essential will make me more marketable in this ever-changing workforce. It will allow me to obtain the title and salary that comes with it. BA General Studies Requirements with a concentration in HR Essentials

A Bachelor of Arts in General Studies covers a broad scope of jobs. If the time comes and I want to change my current career path or even pursue an advanced degree having a General Studies background will provide me with many options. In the post What Are the Best General Studies Careers
(2020)
According to the BLS, jobs in Media and Communication are expected to grow 4% from 2019 to 2029, which will result in over 27,000 new jobs. Additionally, Business and Financial occupations are projected to have an 5% increase in the same timeframe. This is great news for graduates of a General Studies program and useful information that can be used to create a degree program that has the potential for a long-term, well-paying career.
I am confident that completing my bachelor’s degree in general studies is the best decision for me, and it will give me the most options with all my past academic studies. REFERENCES
