Fluency and Comprehension Strategies
Fluency starts with helping students develop their reading skill. and that starts with lots of reading (Reading Rocket,
n.d.). James Dean. Kimberly Dean, and Eric Litwin are great authors to help students build fluency and comprehension
with large print to help with attention to the Print Awareness (Demco, Inc., 2013).
In Pete the Cat books there is a lot of repetition, rhyme and songs the engage the students and help them develop
phonemic awareness - hearing the individual sounds (Demco, Inc. 2013.
Two Strategies to help build students with their comprehension are:
1. Talk about what they‘re reading is a “verbal processing“ that helps the students remember and think through the themes of the book (Scholastic Parents staff,
2012). The teacher asks questions, before, during, and after the book to help encourage reading comprehension.
2. Felt Board Stories
Felt Board Stories introduce literacy and promotes creative play while story telling become exciting and fun (Facebook, n.d.).
Use the felt board and felt pieces from the story to tell the story. Teacher Strategies
Asking Questions Activity
While reading the story the teacher would stop periodically to ask questions about
what is happening in the story.
Felt Board Stories
While reading the Book Pete the Cat. I would put each piece of the felt pieces that
go along with the story as I read the story.
Fluency Activities
Counting and Literacy Activities with Pete the Cat
While reading the story “Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons”
I have a Felt Board Piece of Pete the Cat and the buttons that can be put on or off with velcro.
While reading the story the class and the teacher read and count the buttons on Petes shirt. As the
buttons pop off in the story the teacher/students remove a button from the felt Pete. This is done
throughout the book. The Teacher asks “How many Buttons are on His shirt now?
During Small Group
The teacher and students act out the story
Pete the Cat “I love my White Shoes”
The teacher and students will step in the bucket
of red, blue, brown, and white.
This will help the students to remember and
retell the story. Having real props..
Part 2:Supporting Vocabulary

Vocabulary Strategies
Vocabulary Learning through Direct Instruction (Engaging Kindergarten Vocabulary Activities,
2023). Students remember words when they can connect the words to meaning to their prior
knowledge. Students are to be exposed to the words in different ways.
*Explicitly taught the meaning of the word (Engaging Kindergarten Vocabulary Activities,
2023).
*Create sentences that contain the new word (Engaging Kindergarten Vocabulary Activities,
2023). *Create scenerios or stories in which they use the word (Engaging Kindergarten Vocabulary
Activities, 2023).
