Preschoolers
Build Names
*Identifies Sound and recognizes letters
associated with beginning of first and
last name (CLLD2.4C).
**Begins to represent all letters in their
name (CLLD3.1n).
***Represents all letters in their name,
with sequencing, positioning, and
reversals still evidenced (CLLD3.1t).
Preschoolers are at an important stage in development. Preschoolers are
beginning to examine language and literacy in a more orderly way
(EuroKids, 2024). “Inviting the preschoolers .in activities the make learning
enjoyable is important for their cognitive growth” (EuroKids, 2024).
Building Names
is an “exciting and
beneficial literacy activity for
preschoolers” (EuroKids, 2024). .
*Imitates most sounds of language using
familiar words (CLLD2.3f).
**Begins to connect alphabet letters and corresponding
sounds (e.g., connecting letter and sounds of common
letters/words (CLLD2.4d).
Phonemic Awareness
Building Name Activity
Materials: Name Building Blocks
Use the Name building blocks that
preschoolers can handle easy. The
teacher personalizes the building
blocks with each letter of the students
name on the blocks. The teacher helps the students to arrange their name
building blocks in the correct order to
spell their name. Have another
reference so the students can look at
to help spell their names.
Building the name involves
recognizing the sequence of the
letters in their names. Which is a very
important skill in literacy.
As students build their name the
teacher is to encourage the students
to say each letter of their name out
loud. Saying the letters out loud
reinforces letter recognition and helps
on phonemic awareness (EuroKids,
2024).. To extend the Building name activity.
When the students are comfortable
writing their name. The teacher can
have the students wrtite their name
on a whiteboard. Clap and Count Syllables
Gather children in a circle. Sing
“Clapping All Our Names.” Tell children
you are going to clap the parts of their
names and you want them to join you.
Say, Now let’s clap our names together.
Listen carefully and clap when I do. First
say your name slowly in its natural
rhythm, then say your name and clap
each syllable as you do. For example,
say, Miss Jacobs. Then say, Miss Ja-
cobs, clapping as you say each part.
To extend, the teacher can break
children into small groups. Have
pictures of different animals. Have
numers 1, 2 and 3. Students and teacher
clap and see how many syllables are in
the item or picture. For example,
butterfly. But-ter-fly has three syllables.
Children would put the butterfly on the
number three.
Technology can be used using ABCYA.

Phonics
Letter Sorting
Sorting Letters of the alphabet is a great
exercise for preschoolers to Identify and
Differentiate letter names and sounds
(Gregory, n.d.). Teacher prints out letter or use Magnetic
Letters. The children and teacher sort the letters
accordingly. The teacher can start
categories such as Curve and Straight
Lines.
Extend: Have letters at the top of the
paper. Children sort letters according to the
Letter and Sound.
Students can practice writing letters on a
white board.
Technology: Have on the board to Sort
letters to the Curves, Straight lines. Have pictures of Images: Apple the
student sorts the letter A to apple.
Begins to use distinct letter like symbols
and letter formation with curves, lines,
circles, dots to represent words, ideas,
phrases, sentences, and stories or events
with or without drawing (CLLD3.1h)
.
Incorporate Rhymes
Orally produces or reproduces simple culturally and
linguistically familiar rhymes or sing favorite songs
(CLLD2.3e).
Children encounter rhymes from an early age.
Different letter Sounds and Rhyming words.
*Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
**Itsy Bitsy Spider
Rhyming prompts children to repeat sounds
and patterns, reinforcing their grasp of word
sounds (Ahrndt, 2023).
Teacher and children are sitting in a circle.
Teacher points to the words and says the
rhyme and has the children repeat the rhyme
back to the teacher. Extend: Have students practice pointing to the
rhyme as the sing it during center time.
Students can act out the rhyme.
Technology: Students can listen to the rhyme
on the Technology.

Comprehension
Story Sequencing
Story Sequencing helps
in understanding the
logical order flow of the
narrative (12 Best

2023, 2023). Story
sequencing helps the
students grasp the
understanding of the
beginning, middle, and
ends, and the most
important of sequencing
in story telling (12 Best
Reading Comprehension
Activities for Kids in
2023, 2023).
The skill of storytelling is
critical for
comprehension and
narrative skills.
*Narrates a story using pictures as a guide
(CLLD 2.2m).
**Recites from memory words, phrases, and
parts of a favorite strory (CLLD2.2n).
After Reading or singing the
story of the Itsey Bitsy Spider.
The teacher provides the
students with a series of mixed
up events from the narrative.
The students task is to arrange
the story events in the correct
order.
Extend: Use a different story to
put in order.
Technology: Have a story on
technology. Periodically the
teacher stops and ask
questions on the story.
Role Play
Identifies the feelings of characters in a
book or story (CLLD2.2f).
Repeats words heard during story-telling
(CLLD2.2j).
The teacher selects a scene or character
from a story. For example; The Three Little
Pigs. The teacher has the students act out
the story, wither alone, with friends, and
even with the class. The teacher is to have
props, costumes, or even just use their
imagination.
For some additional fun, turn the role play
into one of the reading comprehension
games. The students can gain points or
rewards when they stay true to the story.
Role Playing helps in hands on approach to
help the students understand the story.
The students get to step into the
character’s shoes, children can get a better
understanding of the characters
motivation, feelings, and actions. Role
playing is an engaging way to reinforce the
story details and deepen the students
comprehension (12 Best Reading
