ENG 150 Introduction & Thesis Worksheet for the Rhetorical Analysis
INTRODUCTION
To write an effective introduction for a rhetorical analysis, you must give context. This context can include information about the speaker, timing, and situation.
In the box below, brainstorm some points of context you could include in your introduction.
Author/Title of the speech I will analyze: Thomas Hanks. A commencement Address at Vassar College ’’The Power of Four’’
Context:
Tom Hanks is called to take the stand against a recognized university "Vassar College “at Poughkeepsie. He offers a talk on a specific timeframe where the world has changed in many different aspects. Hence, many students were joining a world they haven’t been part of for 4 years. He used that to teach an important lesson with four simple letters. The talk is based on the gridlock problem and how can be solved. Here, "The Power of
Four” jumps in teaching that in order to get rid of traffic, we must get rid of
4 cars out of 100. The university confers a bachelor of arts. This knowledge
allows Tom Hanks to prepare himself for his audience by offering quotes from novels, or trending music. The college has such prestige and history that is important for him to teach them clearly and in a way that connects with them professionally.
THREE PART THESIS STATEMENT After giving context, it’s important to signal that you will be giving a rhetorical analysis of the speech you’ve chosen. You can do this by considering three questions as you write your thesis.
My answers to the thesis questions:
1.
What was the purpose of the speech?
Advice the students with simplicity
Prepare them for the world ahead of them
Urge them to never forget to help
2.
Was the speech effective at fulfilling that purpose? Not effective? Somewhat effective
but also somewhat ineffective? His speech was well effective, I do feel the reality of his commencement
3.
How do you know? In other words, what rhetorical appeals or strategies did the speaker use to reach their audience and achieve their purpose? (Give a brief overview
of the main points you will make in your analysis that show why the speech was

effective or less effective.) The speaker used ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to his audience and achieve his purpose. He used a logical appeal by citing scientific studies to back up his claims and support his idea of increasing the number of members of Congress. He drew on the emotions of his audience by mentioning the struggles of the American people without Congressional action and the need for representatives to stand together and work together if meaningful progress is to be made. He also provided a moral and ethical argument by pointing out the importance of unity and collective action to get the job done. Through the use of these rhetorical strategies, the speaker was able to successfully persuade his audience of the necessity of expanding the number of members of Congress to reduce gridlock and help America move forward.
INTRODUCTION AND THESIS
Now try to combine your brainstorm for the introduction with your answers to the thesis questions into one strong paragraph. My introduction and thesis:
Tom Hanks is one of the most humanized, artistic actors in the US with many nominees. He was selected to give a commencement talk to a well-known university of art Vassar College. “Vassar is renowned for pioneering achievements in education, for its long history of curricular innovation, and for the beauty of its campus" (Vassar). Because of his good college students and how artistic they are, the leadership of the college decided to represent success in one human being. These college students, that were graduating, went through many things before 2005. The world had turned into a very dusty place where everyone was rushing and scared of the future. Many things were different but the logic and good sense were the reason for the speech. The purpose was to give advice on how important is to help. And how by doing small things we can achieve things that looked to be impossible. This speech
had a great impact on the audience because he delivered it with great tools such as ethos, pathos, and logos.
