Homework Assignment: Due 11/13 at midnight
Global Positioning System (GPS)
For each problem, please show all the work necessary to solve the problem and
box your final answers.
Problem 1 (10 pts):
What is the PDOP given the following: Round to one decimal place
Ionospheric/Atmospheric error = 13’
Satellite clock error = 2.1’
Multipath error = 2.3’
Orbit error = 4’
Receiver error = 1.5’
Total error estimate is 22.124' √

22.124/14.0338877 = 1.57 Pdop value
Problem 2 (10 pts):
You are allowed a maximum total error of 25’. What is the maximum PDOP you
can have given the following error.
Ionospheric/Atmospheric error = 13’
Satellite clock error = 2.1’
Multipath error = 2.3’
Orbit error = 4’
Receiver error = 1.5’
25/14.0338877 = 1.781
The max value PDOP value with a max error of 25 feet. Problem 3 (60 pts):
Go to gnssplanning.com and determine the following. Provide screenshots as proof of your work.
1.
Under ‘Settings’ click the ‘Detect your location button’
2.
Make sure the ‘Elevation Cutoff’ is set to 15 degrees.
3.
Change the start time for your mission to 12:00. Change period to 6 hours. We will keep the time zone at UTC -05.00 Eastern Time and check to see if the date is correct. Click Apply.
4.
Under the Satellites Selection, we will select all GPS (US) Satellites. We will clear all others.
-On your birthday at 12:00PM in 2023, how many satellites were available at your current location with a mask angle of 15 degrees.
There were 7 satellites available at my current location at 12pm on my birthday.
-What was the best PDOP between 12:00PM and 6PM during the same time.
The best PDOP was 1.68 -Provide screenshots of the number of satellites visible, the PDOP, and a skyplot.
Problem 4 (10
pts):
-What are the 3 segments of GPS?
The 3 segments of GPS are GPS Control Segment, Space segment, and the user segment. Problem 5 (10 pts):
-What are the advantages of GPS?
Some advantages of GPS are: free to use, reliable in any condition, and unlimited user capacity.
