4. The band gap is the energy difference between the valance band and the conduction band. In any bulk material except doped semiconductors, the valance band is composed of molecular orbitals that are _______A________and the conduction band is composed of molecular orbitals that are __________B___________.

       answers are A;B

Group of answer choices

A.) mostly antibonding orbitals that are devoid of electrons;mostly bonding orbitals that are filled with electrons

B.) mostly bonding orbitals that are filled with electrons; mostly antibonding orbitals that are devoid of electrons
C.) mostly bonding orbitals that are devoid of electrons; mostly antibonding orbitals that are full of electrons
Expert Solution
Step 1

The bandgap is the difference between the valence band and the conduction band. The conduction band corresponds to a band of higher energy sate while the valence band corresponds to a band of ground state or lower energy.

When the electron has sufficient energy greater than the bandgap energy then it goes to the conduction band from the valence band.  Thus the majority of electrons lie in the valence band while very less or a number of electrons are present in the conduction band.

  • The valence band is composed of molecular orbitals that are mostly bonding orbitals and is filled with electrons
  • The conduction band is composed of molecular orbitals that are mostly anti-bonding orbitals and is devoid of electrons
