Ricardo Illescas A20554662 October 7, 2023. CS 487 Participation 4 1. Why is the “card + 4-digit PIN” protocol for an ATM less than “perfectly” secure? How many digits are necessary to achieve “perfectly” secure? To guess a 4 digit PIN you need a thousand or less tries to find the correct match, which is pretty fast to compute, once there is an existent card number, finding the PIN would be quite simple. There isn’t a number of digits that would be perfectly secure, increasing the number of digits would make the process more secure, but it is impossible to achieve perfect security. 2. Can a fully self-driving car be engineered to be “perfectly” safe? Explain your answer with an example. No, same as the 4-digit PIN, it is impossible to achieve perfect security. There is not even a perfectly secure driver that could find a way to make the system aware. No matter the amount of sensors and algorithms, there are always many decisions that need to be made, that would jeopardize the security of either the driver, or a third party. The typical example is a car facing an instance in which either the driver dies, or 5 civilians die, either of the two ways is not perfectly secure. 3. Describe a testing strategy for the safety requirements that does not risk an actual car crash. A testing strategy could be modeling and simulating computer based cases in which those possible crashes and risky situations to the system, in order to see how the system is handling all of this cases. Another thing that could be done, is testing each sensor and machine separately, to see how would the system react, when only controlling limited elements. 4. Describe the role of “awareness” in achieving acceptably safe exception management in an automated mission-critical system. Awareness is the most important thing in a mission-critical system. The more variables and possible threats a system is exposed to and has a protocol for, the safer a system becomes and there is less chance of a failure. 5. Describe a mechanism for an automated system to assess the awareness of a human user and to increase that awareness by a measurable amount.
There could be a type of exam, questionnaire during driving to ensure the human driver is paying attention to the surroundings, as the process goes, human driver’s results should tend to increase after being raised questions about certain details that the human didn’t have awareness of.
