Name: Date: School: Facilitator: 3.06 Fingerprint Lab (50 Points) Part 1: Fingerprint Examiners and Pre-lab Reflection Respond to the following questions in complete sentences . (4 points each) 1. What is the ACE-V method? Write your response below: A method used to reach a determination on each print 2. What are the responsibilities of a fingerprint examiner? What tools do they use? Write your response below: The examiner looks at the quality and quantity of information in the print to find areas of agreement or disagreement between the print collected from the crime scene and the prints on file. They use a magnifier known as a loupe, a pointer, or a ridge counter . 3. Briefly describe the crime and the role of the fingerprint examiner. Sonia is a civil litigation attorney. The job she works at has a cabinet which they keep physical files and case documentation in their office. At night the office was broken into Sonia’s desk and several files pertaining to a case were stolen. The examiner would use several processes to enhance and examine the prints. Once the prints are visible the examiner must compare the prints from the crime scene to those provided by the suspects. 4. Part 2: The Process Respond to the following questions in complete sentences . (4 points each) 5. Is a fingerprint class or individual evidence? Explain why. Individual, because a fingerprint will remain unchanged during an individual's lifetime. 6. How many ridge characteristics and specific points of reference are required to make a match between an unknown print and known print from a suspect or a known print from someone who was at the crime scene but is not considered a suspect (like Sonia, in this case)? 10 and 16 © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021
7. How can you determine if a fingerprint contains one of the major classes of an arch, loop, or whorl, and determine the subcategory of that class? Write your response below: By their distinguishing characteristics, an arch ridge line enters one side and exits the other, a loop must have one delta, a whorl must have two deltas. Part 3: Analysis Record your observations of the lifted prints in the table below. (2 points each) Method used to obtain print Which suspect, if any, is the best match? Distinguishing Characteristics Name at least 2 Dusting and lifting Suspect B- Left Index It's the same shape, it's a little pointy at the tip and they both have a loop. Ninhydrin Suspect C - Right Thumb They both are a little pointed at the top and the lines end the same way going to the right. Iodine fuming Suspect A - Right Thumb Although you can barely see you can see that they both look like they have an arch in the middle of it. Direct print Suspect D - Right Thumb The right index finger has a loop going to the right so that means the thumb goes that way too. Respond to the following questions in complete sentences. (6 points each) 8. Which suspects do you think were present at the scene? Explain your reasoning. Write your response below: Suspect A because it looks like the fingerprint using iodine fuming was on a sticky note. Suspect B because it also looks like it's directly from the scene. © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021
