Name: Date: School: Facilitator: 1.04 Training, Force, and Defense (40 Points) Part 1: Law Enforcement Using the information from the lesson and the Part 1 resources linked on the Task page, answer the following questions. 1. Describe how a member of law enforcement should act when he or she first arrives at the scene of a crime or accident. (2 points) Write your response below: They have to be protected from any environmental hazards 2. Based on the ALEA Employment Information website, pick 1 law enforcement job that interests you (such as an ALEA Trooper or SBI Special Agent). What are the entry-level requirements for this job? [“Entry-level” means the basic or lowest level qualifications for a job, and they might include education, training, and/or other work experience.] (2 points) a. Job title: ALEA Trooper, Traniee    b. Entry-level requirements: They have to be 21+ and they have to have a highschool diploma or GED certificate.    3. What is the PAAT and what is it used for? Which of its requirements do you think would be the most difficult for you to perform? It is Physical Agility Ability Test and I would say the 22 push ups in 60 seconds because I can barely do any and I don’t really have upper body strength   (1 point) Scenario 1: Officer Barlow and her partner have been called to a bar just after closing time. There is a man in the parking lot, threatening another person with a knife. The other person isn't being hostile back but is unable to leave. The man with the knife is demonstrating aggressive and hostile behaviors toward the other man but is not moving toward him. Officer Barlow issues a verbal command to the man with the knife, instructing him to put the knife on the ground, back away, and lie face-down on the ground with his hands on his head. The hostile man begins swearing at the © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021 Part 2 of this assignment was adapted from the “ALEA Trooper, Trainee (Candidate): PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan”.
officers and refuses to comply, but he throws the knife away. He is demonstrating aggressive body language and verbal hostility, but he’s not immediately moving to attack anyone. At this point in the situation, assuming nothing changes (the man continues to be hostile and uncooperative but does not take aggressive action against anyone), what is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? Remember: officers should use the option that represents the minimal amount of force necessary to reduce the immediate threat. Refer to the Use of Force Decision Chart (linked on the Task page) for help deciding what Officer Barlow should do. 4. What is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? (1 point) C    a. No force (Verbal commands, officer presence) b. Moderate/Limited force (Physical control holds, OC spray) c. Less-lethal force (Electronic control weapon, ASP/baton) d. Deadly force (Firearm) 5. Explain your reasoning. (3 points) Write your response below: I picked Less-Lethal force because the Suspect has a weapon and is threatening others with it. Even though it isn’t being used it’s still good to be alert and ready. Scenario 2: Officer Kent has been called to a domestic disturbance in a suburban neighborhood, and he hears loud sounds of a fight coming from the open side door of the house. Approaching, Officer Kent realizes that a man inside is threatening another person with a kitchen knife. There is blood visible on several surfaces, and while the officer cannot clearly see the other person, he can see that the man with the knife has blood on his shirt and his arm holding the knife. Officer Kent issues a verbal command for the man to put the knife on the ground, move away, lie face down on the ground, and put his hands on his head. The man ignores Officer Kent completely, and he moves to slash the knife down at where the officer believes the other person to be. At this point in the situation, faced with a time-sensitive decision (the man appears to be attacking another person with a deadly weapon), what is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? Remember: officers should use the option that represents the minimal amount of force necessary to reduce the immediate threat. © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021 Part 2 of this assignment was adapted from the “ALEA Trooper, Trainee (Candidate): PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan”.
Refer to the Use of Force Decision Chart (linked on the Task page) for help deciding what Officer Kent should do. 6. What is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? (1 point) D    a. No force (Verbal commands, officer presence) b. Moderate/Limited force (Physical control holds, OC spray) c. Less-lethal force (Electronic control weapon, ASP/baton) d. Deadly force (Firearm) 7. Explain your reasoning. (3 points) Write your response below: The Officer witnessed someone attack somone else with a knife. He said that the suspect moved to slash the knife down at where the officers think the victum is. With that being said you would have to use a firearm Scenario 3: Officer Jackson witnesses a verbal altercation between a man and a woman on the street. The woman becomes physically belligerent with the man, getting in his face, pushing him, and shouting. The man gets in his car and drives away, and the woman starts walking down the street shouting after him. Officer Jackson approaches the woman, who begins swearing at her and then walks away from her. Officer Jackson orders the woman to stop, but the woman ignores her and continues walking away. At this point the woman is walking back toward her open apartment door, ignoring repeated commands to stop. At this point in the situation, faced with an altered situation (the woman was physically aggressive with the man earlier, but she has stopped since), what is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? Remember: officers should use the option that represents the minimal amount of force necessary to reduce the immediate threat. Refer to the Use of Force Decision Chart (linked on the Task page) for help deciding what Officer Jackson should do. 8. What is the correct amount of force for the officers to use to neutralize the threat? (1 point) B    a. No force (Verbal commands, officer presence) b. Moderate/Limited force (Physical control holds, OC spray) c. Less-lethal force (Electronic control weapon, ASP/baton) © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021 Part 2 of this assignment was adapted from the “ALEA Trooper, Trainee (Candidate): PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan”.

d. Deadly force (Firearm) 9. Explain your reasoning. (3 points) Write your response below: She isn’t complying Part 2: Training The second part of this assignment will take a minimum of 1 week to complete. Submit Part 1 to your teacher before completing this second half. Speak to your teacher if you need to modify any of the exercises or training program below. As you have learned in this lesson, law enforcement officers are required to train, exercise, and practice many different skills, as well as build their endurance and speed, in order to be prepared for the physical requirements of securing the scene. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) suggests a 5-week exercise plan – the PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan (linked on the Task page) – for those wanting to complete the PAAT successfully. You don’t need to complete all five weeks, but we are going to complete one week of stretching and similar exercises to see what training for the physicality of a law enforcement job might entail. There are video tutorials for stretches and exercises linked on the Task page. Use them to complete your version of the training plans listed below. Document your progress on the training log (below the plan). Warm Up and Stretch Before starting any exercise, complete a dynamic warm-up to prevent any injury and prepare the body for work. The dynamic warm-up should incorporate exercises that involve the large muscle groups. Sample dynamic warm-up exercises: Running in place Jumping jacks or side straddle hops Lunges Air squats Arm circles © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021 Part 2 of this assignment was adapted from the “ALEA Trooper, Trainee (Candidate): PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan”.
Leg swings Option 1: Alternating Exercises On each day of training, you should complete either the ‘Core work’ list of exercises or the ‘Upper body’ list of exercises. Note: Each set is followed by one minute of rest and five minutes of rest between each exercise. If you’re unable to complete more than 1 or 2 sets at a time or unable to complete all of the suggested exercises, that’s okay! Just complete these to the best of your ability and document your progress. Core work: Planks 3 sets of 30-60 seconds Sit ups 3 sets of 15 Straight leg lifts 3 sets of 10 Crunches 3 sets of 15 Upper body: Wide pushups 3 sets of 10 (hands further apart on the floor than normal push-ups) Triceps dips 3 sets of 5 Close or diamond pushups 3 sets of 5 (hands closer together than normal push-ups with the pointer finger and thumb of each hand touching) Option 2: Running For each day of training, you should run at a normal pace between 10-30 minutes at a time. If you’re unable to complete 10 minutes of running at a time, that’s okay! Try walking part of the way. Just complete this exercise to the best of your ability and log your progress. Training Log 10. Complete the 1-week exercise log based on the above training plan options. (15 points) a. Complete the warm-up and stretches and list the time it takes. b. Complete a week of Option 1: Alternating ‘core work’ or ‘upper body’ exercises OR complete the running activities in Option 2. c. You should have 2 days of rest on your schedule! List “Rest” in each column for those two days. d. On Day 7, you’ll complete a timed exercise to see how well you might perform on parts of the PAAT. © ACCESS Virtual Learning 2021 Part 2 of this assignment was adapted from the “ALEA Trooper, Trainee (Candidate): PAAT Physical Fitness Preparation Plan”.
Day Warm Up/Stretches (List your time) Exercise Option 1: Indicate either ‘Core Work’ or ‘Upper Body’ Option 2: Put ‘Run’ Total Work Out Time 1 2 3 4 5 6 11. On the final day (Day 7), you should warm-up and then you will test yourself against the push-up and sit-up requirements OR the running requirements of the PAAT. (5 points) a. Option 1: If you completed the alternating core work and upper body sections of training, you will test your sit-up and push-up abilities. i. Time yourself completing as many push-ups as you safely can in 60 seconds. How many did you complete? ii. Time yourself completing as many sit-ups as you safely can in 60 seconds. How many did you do? b. Option 2: If you completed the running section of training, you will test your running ability. i. Time yourself running either 0.5 miles, 1 mile, or 1.5 miles (whichever you feel that you can best complete). What was your time and your distance? Training Reflection (3 points) 12. How was this training experience? Compared to the requirements of the PAAT test, how did you do? Here are the relevant PAAT requirements: a. Option 1: i. The candidate must be able to complete at least 22 push-ups in 60 seconds. ii. The candidate must complete at least 25 sit-ups in 60 seconds b. Option 2: i.
