As you begin your literature review, what themes and trends do you see emerging? Identify at least three different themes and how they affect your research.
My literature review focuses on obesity prevention among university students, and I
have noticed several emerging themes. First, many studies have all mentioned that there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among all demographics, and consequently, such prevalence rate leads to an increase in obesity-related complication. In the case of U.S. university students, they are among the most affected populations, and according to Yashi (2022), almost “1 in 3” college students have obesity presently; however, despite the severity, there is limited process in addressing the issue. Under this circumstance, our research, advised by Wing (2003), must focus on treating a very large number of overweight or obese individuals in a cost-effective manner. Second, many studies
have all mentioned that in addition to treatment, interventions must also focus on educating overweight and obese individuals on effective maintenance. Many individuals have lost a significant amount of body weight through treatments; however, a large portion of these individuals regained the loss weight later on. This shows that our research must target both short and long term solutions. Third, in addition to treatment, many studies have all mentioned the need to also focus on preventing excess weight gain. As explained by Wing (2003), the dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obese individuals makes immediate actions desirable; however, it is extremely necessary to develop effective ways to prevent such issue from occurring in the first place. As such, my research should incorporate
empirical evidence that aims at the prevention.
