Research Design and Analysis- C226 BFP2 Task 1: Kyle Clinedinst Student ID-001029234 Mentor: Shannon Hardiman June 13, 2022
Research Topic The purpose of this research study is to determine which form of parent/teacher or family/teacher communication is viewed as most beneficial and supportive to families for different circumstances. Teachers today have many forms of communication that range from in person, phone calls, handwritten letters, and technology. Each form of communication has its strengths and weaknesses, but which form do parents prefer and should these forms of communication differ depending on the situation? We understand that parent involvement is crucial to the development of children. Would parents be more willing to be involved if there was better communication between them and the teachers? Also, do parents of children with behavior problems feel that the only communication they receive is negative? How might a positive message to these parents impact their involvement? There are many forms of one-way and two-way communication used by teachers and parents. Every day, teachers and parents face situations at home and school in which they may need to communicate with each other. Not all situations are equal. I think that if we as teachers can better understand which form of communication parents prefer, we could have better partnerships and build a positive atmosphere among students, parents, and teachers. Participants The participants of this study are the parents (guardians) of the 20 students in my class. 5 students live with both their mother and father, 8 split custody between parents, 4 live with only their mother or father, 2 live with their grandparents, and 1 is in foster care. All students and parents speak English as their primary language. While I will have a new
set of students and parents next school year, these current students and parents represent the school's population. My school resides in an area of low income, 89% of the population classifies as low income. My school has 100% free breakfast and lunch for every student. Purpose of the Data Collection Instrument The purpose of this data collection instrument is to determine the form of communication parents find most effective and which form they prefer depending on different circumstances. These circumstances include general relationship building strategies, general class updates, behavior concerns, homework assignment, schedule changes, and grades. Also, this study will allow parents to express their feelings about positive and negative messages being received about their child. Understanding which form of communication parents prefer based on different circumstances and how parents feel about communicating with teachers will help me become a better communicator and hopefully increase parent involvement. Type of Data Collected For this study, I will use a mixed method research design. The mixed methods design will collect data through multiple choice questions and answers and 2 open ended extended response questions. The questionnaire has 10 questions. 8 questions have different circumstances that may arise at school or home. For each circumstance, parents will choose their preferred form of communication. They can also explain why they prefer this form of communication if they would like, but this is not mandatory. The

last 2 open ended questions allow parents to express any barriers they may have or feel toward school and teachers. Ethical Issues and Considerations There may be some ethical issues that need to be addressed with the participants and self-reflection on my part as the researcher. First, I must make sure the participants are informed and aware of the research purpose. To do this, I will send home a letter a week before the study, and attach a letter to the study. The letter will explain the purpose of this study is for me to better understand parents' views on communication to help me become a better communicator. A second ethical issue that may occur is the treatment and experiences of the participants. This is defined as “an area of ethical concern that impacts how researchers design their studies so that physical, psychological, and emotional harm does not occur as a result of their research.” (Acrobatiq 2022) To address this issue, I will make the participants aware that this study is completely confidential. To ensure confidentiality, parents will drop off the surveys in my mailbox in the school's office while I am not present. They can also have their children return the questionnaires to the school secretary who will make sure they stay anonymous. The third and final ethical issue that may occur is researcher bias. This is when researchers allow their own views and beliefs to affect the data and how it is interpreted. Since this questionnaire has 2 open ended questions, I must reflect on my own beliefs and views before collecting the data. This will help me monitor and attempt to control my own biases. Questionnaire Below
Parents/Guardians, Thank you again for participating in this research study. The purpose of this study is to help me better understand your feelings on parent/teacher communication and build better relationships that will in turn help your child. Please remember that this survey is completely anonymous. Please return this to the office and our school secretary will collect them for me. For questions 1-8, a different scenario is provided. Please select whether you feel communication from the teacher is warranted and if so, which form of communication would you prefer. You may also explain your answer if you would like. 1.
