Confidential 1. Explain if Amy is effective as the listener. Does she stay in the role of the listener? Why or why not? Which listening style does she use to help her accomplish her communication goal? Which stage of the listening process is she demonstrating the least competency in? What evidence is there of this? I do not think she is an effective listener. Even though she is listening to him she is not responding to him in a manner. That is saying she is not interested in understanding want he is saying. She does stay in the role of the listener throughout the conversation. She shows the least competency in the evaluation stage. Because she is only interested in what she wants. And is just responding to him to get to what she wants. She is not taking any time to think about what he is say and just responds. 2. How does Amy adjust her listening by deciding to use a different listening type and which listening type does she choose? Why do you think she chose to adjust? Does Sheldon believe this change means she is now effectively listening to him? Why or why not? In the beginning of the scene, you can see that Amy is not really listening to Sheldon. As scene progresses Amy employees active listening. Where she is listening to his every word but is really trying to get what she wants. She makes him believe she is listening to him by responding to him appropriately and affirming everything he is saying. Which in turn he continues with his part of the conversation. 3. How would you evaluate Amy in terms of evidence of being an active listener as she receives, understands, remembers, evaluates, and responds to the sender’s message in this situation? What evidence is there she is using at least two specific active listening techniques? How do these active listening techniques reduce or overcome barriers to her listening? She is an active listener because she is listening to every word Sheldon is saying and then responding the way she does with him all the time. Even though it is all affirming what he is saying. So, he feels validated in what his point is to her. As he is going over his pros and cons list. She can understand his plight in making this decision. And she responds the way he is looking for her to respond. 4. What is the relational context between Amy and Sheldon? Explain two strategies Amy uses for the responding stage of the listening process to let the sender know she has used effective listening skills and understands his message or does not understand his message. Amy and Sheldon are in a courtship relationship at this point. At the beginning Amy does not really seem to care what he is talking about and does not respond much. As the conversation continues, she starts to receive the messages from him and evaluates on the information that she has. She then responds with the same tone that Sheldon is talking to her in. 5. Critical listening skills can help the listener take a more proactive role in the listening process. Explain two strategies Amy could use to reduce barriers and improve listening by using Critical Listening in the Evaluation Stage. Does Amy keep a focus on being an ethical listener, so she does not prejudge the sender? How does she do this or not do this? Amy could have asked questions of Sheldon to better understand the problems he is having to make this decision. She is working on limited knowledge of the problem and does not try to
Confidential really understand where he is coming from. She does not focus on being an ethical listener she has a goal and wants to achieve that goal but does not care or want to hear about the problem he is having. Big Bang Theory
