Bayer et al. (2022) “Building and Breaking Social Media Habits” (posted to the Canvas folder) 1. What are habits (p. 1)? Implicit associations that people learn as they respond in ways that are rewarded. 2. Note that “social media use often represents a form of habitual behavior” (p. 2). 3. Note that “habits can both support and undermine personal goals. For example, automatically replying to messages from one’s partner may help with being an efficient partner whereas habitually switching to Reddit can interfere with being an efficient student (p. 2). 4. What is the difference between habits and addiction (p. 2)? Addiction has a more negative context defined by problematic behaviors with ineffective self-regulation. 5. Note that the authors argue there are five “levels of analysis” that impact how our social media habits develop. In other words, to better understand our social media habits, we should investigate the context in which our habits emerge, including the 1) platform, 2) device, and 3) interface. Then, we should investigate our responses to social media, including 4) behavior responses and 5) motor responses. a. In the diagram on page 4, the authors provide three examples for each of the five “levels of analysis” above. In your own words, explain what the three context levels and two response levels refer to. (for the exam, make sure you are able to provide an example for each of these): i. Platform: Electronic locations to communicate and conduct habitual social processes. ii. Device: Physical hardware with entertainment at the tip of our fingers, promoting sedentary habits. iii. Interface: Types of social processes to connect with others. iv. Behavior: Mindless actions that are time consuming and disassociate us from the rest of the world. v. Motor: Physical action unto devices that become second nature over spending time on devices. 6. According to the article, social media habits are not always problematic; however, “social media habits become problematic when “ Specific habit sequences consistently undercut users’ goals__________. In other words, it is not that social media is inherently “addictive” so much as ______there are certain habitual scripts that run counter to users’ situational aims if left unchecked___________________” (p. 5). a. In your own words, what does this mean?
Habits formed on social media are understandable unless they surpass the healthy threshold 7. What is “batching” (p. 5)? Notifications are delivered at more predictable intervals throughout the day, can be beneficial for smartphone user beings. 8. How might “batching” help social media users create better habits? By providing a sense of agency and reducing intermittency of distractions, batching may allow users to set mental locks on their social loot boxes.
