Activity SS9-2 Listening Types
Directions:
There are five types of active listening: appreciative, critical, deliberative, empathetic, and reflective. In the following chart, describe a time when you applied each listening type. Reflect on how well you listened during each situation.
Listening Type
Application
appreciative
I applied appreciative listening type when talking with my mom about her cooking so I could learn how and where she started so I could learn the same way because I love her cooking. I listened very well and close to our conversation.
critical
I applied critical listening when fixing an issue for a customer at Target when I worked there. I listened fairly well but misunderstood some details. deliberative
I applied deliberative listening when I was trying to get a loan for a house. I was listening well but was stull confused so I asked lots of questions.
empathetic
I applied empathic listening when sister broke up with her boyfriend. I listened very well and paid close attention and offered support.
reflective
I applied reflective listening when I listen to my classes online about lessons so
I can reflect on what I learned by listening. I try to pay attention during lessons
but sometimes my mind wanders.

Summary Reflection:
1.
After reflecting upon personal situations in which you have had to use the different types
of listening, think about your future as a professional in the workplace in your chosen career path. Choose one of the listening types that is going to be important for you to do well in the workplace. Explain why.
I believe critical, deliberative, and reflective are going to be the most important in my chosen path because I need to be able to reflect, learn, problem-solve, and ask questions about what my boss and coworkers talk about.
2.
In which of the given listening types can you improve your listening. How do you plan on doing so?
I can improve on my reflective listening because sometimes I get too much information for my brain and I start to space out because it is so much. I think I can improve this by going my own pace and learning things my way.
