Ted Talks and Their Reference to Comm. + Aging
Through watching the TED talks, it helped me to open up my outlook on life and to help me fully conceptualize the lessons I have been learning in class. How to live to be 100+ by Dan Buettner
and An Unexpected Place of Healing by Ramona Pearson
reminded me of my own experiences with older individuals and provided examples of the topics and vocabulary we have been discussing. Topics such as positive outlooks on aging, community, and kindness and understanding permeated throughout these videos and correlated strongly with what we have been working on in class.
An Unexpected Place of Healing by Ramona Pearson was the first video I watched. I chose the videos because of my personal connection to retirement homes and the individuals that
live there. I used to volunteer at a retirement home and many loved ones I know are living in retirement homes currently, which helped to establish a foundation of what she was discussing before I started the video. Throughout the speech, she discussed her own healing journey when she was recovering from somebody hitting her with their car. Eventually, she was placed in a retirement home because the hospital felt it was right and she joined a home of unexpectedly pleasant strangers. In class, we discussed the societal views of aging and how we see older people as not being as effective or efficient at life. This video helped to provide a real world example on how we may diminish the skills of older individuals based on their appearance. The speaker held this bias as she went into the home and throughout her experience these people were able to help her navigate life after injury and support her studies. Using social creativity and competition, the people of the nursing home were able to advocate and raise money for the speaker in order for her to receive special treatments or education for her conditions. The older people were also able to reflect their lives and interests onto the speaker within the home, immersing her in their pop culture or properly accommodating her into their lives and
experiences. With the spontaneous community, increased emotional intelligence, and interpersonal communications the older generation was able to help get Ramona back on her feet
and create meaning within her life.
In How to live to be 100+ by Dan Buettner, I learned the “secrets” to living a longer and more fulfilled life. Dan spoke heavily about community and positive outlooks when aging, speaking about “Blue Zones” or places in the world with an increased number of centenarians and what their life habits were that enabled such healthy lives. There he noticed strong senses of community and communication with the older individuals and society. Many examples of social creativity such as Moai were discussed, or groups of lifelong friends or social systems designed to support each other throughout life. This support and positive influence within ages is a strong theme in chapters 1 and 2 of our book, focusing on communication between generations. Positive
outlooks about the older generation also permeated these “Blue Zones” with an important example being Sardinia. These individuals have a strong emphasis on respect and positive outlooks on aging. Instead of viewing aging as an eventual decline that won’t ever improve, the Sardinan people view aging as a privilege and encourage older individuals to do more instead of less. This theme of allowing ourselves to continue to do work and move our bodies as we age is shown throughout our lessons in class with topics such as independent and congruent communication between generations. This video helped me to broadly summarize major themes in the class about positive outlooks about life and helped me connect that positive thinking can lead to better lives, a topic I have been taught back when I took AP Psych in high school.
With these videos I was able to apply what I know from class to real world scenarios and the complex situations in which the lessons we learn in class apply. Major ideas of the class were
able to reflect in the lives of the speakers of Ted Talk and my own.
