Future of Your TV
April 23, 2022
My Eyes are Glued to the Screen: Television Can Be Addicting
My group was The Creators of Your Future, and we created Futurecise. Futurecise is a fitness app
that provides workout games and videos. It is a more convenient way to exercise because all workouts are
accessible through your phone, and it does not require any expensive equipment. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play Store with ads. Users can pay for the premium version for $6.99 dollars a month to get rid of ads and have unlimited access to premium content (more games, videos, live streams).
In addition, the app uses motion-tracking technology that tracks the body’s movement and form. This not only ensures users are properly doing the exercises, but it allows for a more immersive experience. The app also incorporates social media to invite/make friends on the app since there are some people who like to work out with others or need the motivation to work out by competing against other teams. As another incentive, there are credits users can earn when they play more games and videos. These credits can be redeemed for merch or limited access to premium access. We hope to target Futurecise to young adults who are busy with school, work, or children as they have a busier schedule and not much time to exercise.
When looking at our target demographic, higher incomes and middle incomes are more likely to work out
often compared to lower and poor incomes. This is likely because those with poor incomes are focusing on other matters and do not have time to prioritize exercising (Illustrated in the photo right below). This graph shows the percentages of those ages 18 and older who exercise at least three times a week for half an hour or more based on poverty status. 60.6% of high-income individuals work out more while poor income individuals are 44.5% more likely to work out often (Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality & Rhoades, 2005).
There is also the current event of the pandemic and how people were forced to change their workout routine to accommodate the gyms closing. Many people have been less physically active since the lockdowns, but there are also some people who are exercising more than ever. In “Coronavirus pandemic fueled by new fitness trends, research shows”, Andrew Gutman explains that “The rise of remote work has provided Americans with a lot more flexibility in their schedules…The time they may have spent on a
commute or getting ready in the morning can now be used for exercise.” (Gillis, 2022). People are also using more exercise apps, online subscription programs, and purchasing their own equipment. Even when
gyms are opening back up, there are many who are deciding to stick to their new habits and not return to the fitness facilities. This shows that Futurecise has a market and would be profitable.
For the team project, I took the position as the leader of the group. I organized many of the meetings and format for the project. I contributed to the about the product, profitability, market segmentation, competition, and future slides. I also was the one to add all the images and videos into the presentation. My current personal television usage is very high. I am consuming streaming services, social media, and video games every day and likely for 10+ hours a week. I would consider myself addicted since I am constantly online. Whenever I am bored, I will start a new show on Netflix, scroll endlessly on Tik Tok, or invite friends to play video games. Compared to my group mates, I don’t think any of them are using as much TV as I am. They are watching Netflix and using social media to keep in touch with friends. With my interest in video games and wanting people to remain active while indoors, I suggested the idea of an app that makes exercising convenient in the comfort of your own home through video games. My group liked my idea and thought there would be a market for it as the pandemic is still happening and people are staying indoors. In the beginning of our project, our app for basic and seem like
any other fitness app that provided workout videos. I suggested that we implement elements of augmented reality into our app to make it different. This way the game is more fun and not some one pressing buttons to complete objectives in the game. Labor was divided in sections of the projects: About the app, Market segmentation, competition, and future. Everyone did write parts of their slides; however, I had to go back and elaborate sections as well as add images since we had none to begin with. This workflow shift from project research to group presentation was to be responsible to present the part you were assigned in the beginning.
As for our final in-class presentation delivery, I believed we did a good job overall despite many group members not showing up to the meetings scheduled to work on the project and practice the presentation. Our strongest point in the presentation was the visuals and video content. Also, the details put into the market segment and competition. However, our weakest point of our presentation was the lack of detail we put for the augmented reality and the Metaverse. Since we did not expand on how our
app incorporated AR and its impact in the Metaverse, it was main concern during the questions period. Looking back at our audience’s feedback, they overall liked the idea and the presentation. Many expressed that adding the topic of the Metaverse and relation to the pandemic was a good idea. People also thought this app would be useful for those who are scared to exercise in a public space or don’t know
if they are executing the exercise wrong when in a gym or following a video. On the other hand, many criticized how there are lots of other products that are similar ours and concerns on how the motion tracking technology would work efficiently.

After some research of existing innovations that may be similar to our app, we came across in-
person gyms, Peloton, Nintendo Switch, and VR Headsets. In-person gyms allow people to work out with
friends and access to lots of gym equipment that many people
don’t have access to at home. Although we thought our app was
better because gym memberships can be pricey and many of the
machines are complicated. So, for those who are
shy/embarrassed to learn how to use a new machine, they could
use our app instead and avoid that feeling. Peloton is another
competitor as they are a at-home stationary bike with a large
touchscreen that also utilizes live streams with trainers and
provides workout videos. Their live leaderboard is similar to
how we wanted to create that competitive atmosphere with other
users. Peloton also has a digital app that has “over 10 workout types, including strength, stretching, bootcamp, cycling, outdoor running, yoga, and meditation. You can workout alongside others, track your progress with metrics and you can challenge yourself and earn achievements” (O’Boyle, 2022). While the
work outs are like what Futurecise will provide, our app involves more of the video game aspect that creates short term objectives for users to focus on. Peloton’s app also costs $12.99 a month and the bike costs over $1,000 dollars, so Futurecise is much more affordable. As for Nintendo Switch and VR Headsets, they both provide fitness games with features of multiplayer. The downside of both however is that they require all parties to own the equipment to play with each other and the equipment is expensive (both around $299).
This image shows Peloton’s app format. It has different categories for the classes they offer with live trainers or pre-recorded videos. They do offer a 14-day free trial for those who want to try out the app before committing to a subscription.
is for Futurecise to become popular since it is free, accessible to everyone, and makes exercise fun that many people dread doing. This chart shows the changes in US music revenues through the years of 1984-2018. We see that towards the early 2000s, CDs were the main way to listen to music. We slowly see that downloads were also rising in popularity. In the end of graph, we see both CDs and Downloads decreasing while streaming begins to boom and continues to be the main ways we consumer music today.
