Describe your current classroom setting. Then, based on the five components of comprehensive classroom management listed in Chapter 1 in the Jones and Jones text, evaluate your personal management plan. Address each of the five topics listed. What your strengths? What are your weaknesses? In what areas do you believe you are in need of professional development? What changes do you think are needed to strengthen your classroom management? If you are not teaching at this time, describe a classroom in which you have observed or assisted and evaluate the management system you observed. Establishing a conducive learning environment is paramount in education. As an educator, I prioritize creating a welcoming and motivating atmosphere for my students. In my classroom, Anchor and Reference Charts, a word wall, and a data wall serve as ongoing resources, strategically displayed. A reading nook offers a cozy space for literary immersion. Desk arrangements encourage collaborative learning, fostering the "power of conversation." A safe zone promotes open dialogue, facilitating active participation. Through experience, I recognize the importance of effective classroom management in nurturing a positive and engaged learning community. One of the effective classroom management, as advocated by scholars such as Vern Jones and Louise Jones, is the focus on fostering an “understanding of current research and theory in classroom management and students’ personal and psychological needs”(Jones & Jones, 2020). According to their research on classroom management, teachers are more effective when they understand the theory and research that contributes to the classroom management practices that they utilize. Hence, it becomes imperative for educators to not only be masters in instructive techniques but also aware of the psychological aspects of student behavior and development. In conjunction with this approach is the development of positive and nurturing relationships within the classroom community. Research suggests that students thrive academically and socially when they feel valued and supported within their learning environment (Jones & Jones, 2020). Efforts to establish positive teacher-student relationships, peer relationships, and collaborations with guardians are foundational to effective classroom management. "And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these" (Mark 12:31, King James Version). Mark 12:31 emphasizes the significance of love and compassion towards others, alongside love for oneself, thereby underlining the principle communal harmony. Students are able to maximize their learning of important social and academic skills if they are valued and
cared for, yielding a high percentage of good choices and enhanced learning when they have a sense of community and belonging (Jones & Jones, 2020) . Effective classroom management necessitates the establishment of clear behavior expectations, assisting students with developing and committing to behavior expectations that support physical and psychological safety in the classroom. Organizational and group management strategies appease a relaxed yet structured learning environment, conducive to optimal student engagement (Jones & Jones, 2020). Additionally, differentiation in teaching strategies ensures that all academic needs are met, thereby promoting inclusive learning experiences for all students. Effective classroom management extends beyond behavioral control to incorporate teaching strategies tailored to positive learning outcomes. This involves educators utilizing diverse instructional strategies that accommodate both individualized and whole group academic requirements. By adapting teaching approaches to address the unique learning profiles of students, instructors foster an environment conducive to enriched educational experiences and enhanced scholastic achievement. (Jones & Jones, 2020). Within the framework of classroom management, educators must address disruptive behaviors that interrupt both individual and collective learning experiences. This entails responding to encounters of student misconduct that hinder the academic progress of peers and themselves. By employing strategies to mitigate distractions and maintain a conducive learning environment, teachers foster an atmosphere conducive to effective instruction and student engagement (Jones & Jones, 2020). In implementing these principles, various strategies have been utilized in my classroom. The physical layout features Anchor and Reference Charts, a word wall, and a reading nook and collaborative group seating arrangements fosters resource accessibility, meaningful dialogue, and cooperative learning. However, the efficacy of such arrangements relies on robust classroom management. Reflecting on my own practice reveals strengths in relationship-building and community fostering, yet areas for growth still remain with addressing disruptive behaviors. Galatians 5:22-23 says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law" (Christian Today). Galatians 5:22-23 outlines virtues stemming from spiritual
growth, suggesting that cultivating qualities like love, joy, and self-control aligns with divine guidance, transcending legalistic constraints and promoting harmonious living. The lack of training in response techniques poses challenges. Pursuing professional development tailored to improve response techniques and refine behavior perceptions are essential. In assessing a 9th-grade ELAR class, I observed students actively participating in writing station rotations. The teacher structured groups, assigned roles, and provided clear expectations, aided by a timer embedded in the slides. Each station included directions. Interacting with students, I noted their comprehension and adherence to expectations, evident in smooth transitions and full engagement. This experience displayed the vital role of effective classroom management skills in fostering a productive learning environment . Effective classroom management is a mixture of theory, practice, and professional growth. Prioritizing supportive learning communities, research- informed strategies, and continuous improvement fosters environments where students thrive academically and socially (Jones & Jones, 2020).
