OL 125 Module Three Short Response Guidelines and Rubric Effective communication is imperative for a company to ruin efficiently. Poor communication can lead to lawsuits, dangerous situations, wasted efforts, and unnecessary meetings. Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages and responses, or feedback. The variables that can interrupt the communication process are referred to as noise. The best communication is open and honest; otherwise, it may not be trusted and processed as high priority. Additionally, when receiving feedback, it’s important to be listening to the person not anticipating your response (3. Communication, n.d.). One common barrier to effective communication is referred to as information overload. This is a common barrier on my team as we are constantly flooded with information, even when we’re trying to relay important information to each other. We have a group chat typically going all day, our personal emails, a shared email box, staff who have questions, and then are the actually tasks we’re assigned. When a person is flooded with so much information it can make communication difficult as their focus is scattered. As a leader, it’s important to understand which barriers may be in the way of communicating well amongst each other. For instance, I recognized that our team needed a designated time to relay updates and calibrate on how we should handle different situations. As a result, I scheduled a reoccurring bi-weekly meeting for us to review these situations. Additionally, I have setup a shared resource where we can make a list as these weeks progress to add topics for the next meeting. This allows the meeting to be a team meeting and not just my meeting. By having the designated time, it helps reduce some of the noise, particularly noise from information overload.
