I feel that the most important way that families can help a student develop their phonemic awareness skills at an early stage is by talking to them and helping them to properly pronounce sounds. As a parent you should help a child to pronounce words correctly. Even
if it is cute when they say it wrong you should try and help them understand how to say it right. Phonemic awareness is essential to help a student learn to read.
“Reading and phonemic awareness are mutually reinforcing: Phonemic awareness is necessary for reading, and reading, in turn, improves phonemic awareness still further. (Shaywitz, 2013)
"
There are many ways that families can support a child who is struggling with phonemic awareness skills. Here are three different researched based ways. Number one show the child the letters and have them pronounce the sounds. “The greatest impact on phonemic awareness is achieved when there is interaction with print, along with paying specific attention to phonemes, and sound/word
structure. (Wise, 2022).” “
Two play sound games such as let’s clap. This is a game where you clap the syllables in a word. Three use multisensory play such as making letters with playdough. Doing fun activities such as these can help students to want to learn more and encourages them to improve their phonemic awareness.
