Self-Reflection from PAC Overview
1.
Reflect on your own experiences or observations of peer support in academic settings. I remember that when I started college, I sometimes struggled with certain topics of the courses that I was taking. I didn’t know where to start and it was hard for me to take notes since English isn’t my first language. One day I decided to ask one of my classmates
for help. They told me about “Study buddies” on Navigate and about GroupMe groups that I can join with other students who were taking the same course. It was very helpful as I could join study sessions where we would discuss and clarify concepts that we found challenging. It also helped me reduce my level of anxiety as I knew that I wasn’t alone struggling with certain topics of the course. I also join some tutoring sessions led by fellow students who excelled in specific subjects and offered to help us understand the class material. The fact that it was student who provided those sessions made me feel more comfortable asking questions and understand the course material. 2.
Reflect on how these interactions influenced your academic progress, motivation, and
overall learning experience.
Attending peer-led study sessions was definitely a good decision and it positively influenced my learning skills and helped me achieved academic progress. Being able to discuss complex topics with other students not only clarified my doubts on tough subjects but it also exposed me to different perspectives that helped understand the
course material differently. Also, being able to attend one-on-one tutoring sessions helped me acquire new learning skills as the tutor provided me with useful resources and other strategies. 3.
Reflect on how you would like to show up as a PAC based on your own personal experiences. I want to show up as a PAC who genuinely cares about the success of my peers and is willing to go the extra mile to help them achieve their academic goals. From my own experience with study groups and tutoring, I understand that it is important for me to create an open and comfortable learning environment. I want the students to feel free to ask questions without hesitation, I want them to trust me and feel comfortable expressing their struggles and share their thoughts. Creating a
supportive atmosphere will encourage collaborative learning and active participation. I aspire to be an encouraging presence and a model for my peers.
